Aggie87 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Long story short - looks like I'm going to be in New York on Saturday Nov 8th. Actually going to southern NJ to visit a friend of mine for the weekend, and she wanted to take me into the city on Saturday. I had talked her into going to see Jim Hall at the Village Vanguard that night, but now that show's been cancelled. Cecil Taylor is playing there instead, I believe. I don't know if she's ready for Taylor, LOL. I don't know if he's doing a solo show or a band, either. Anybody know what else is going on that night that might be interesting? Looks like Charlie Haden's Liberation Orchestra is playing at the Blue Note. Quote
marcello Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) Boy, there's some slim pickings! Dizzy's is very nice for the atmosphere and view, and some really safe music. The steaks are very good at the Knickerbocker ( and some good music to), but it can be noisy. I like the band that Johnathan Kriesberg has at Smalls. He's got Henry Hey with him too. I don't like Iridium at all, and I think this kind of tribute band is, let's say, not for me. Be brave, go see Cecil! GA Russell Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Hey, what's up with all the gypsy jazz now, like I see at Birdland? First the Hot Club of Detroit made a splash. I heard some group doing it on Sirius ten days ago. In a couple of weeks the Hot Club of San Francisco is putting out a new album. Apparently there has been a revival-fad going on that I am just now finding out about. That might be your best bet, Aggie. It will give your friend something to talk about with her friends. Quote
bertrand Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 The Blakey tribute is at Iridium, not Birdland. How many opportunities are you going to have to hear the music from this obscure Blakey record performed live? I am going to contradict Marcello and strongly recommend this gig. Bertrand. Quote
marcello Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I corrected the venue for the Blakey. Blakey is not Blakey without Bu! I've seen a couple of these Davis Weiss tribute shows at Iridium ( like I said, it's not my favorite venue) like the Wayne Shorter. Not inspiring, or to my taste. Quote
kh1958 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I would opt for the Charlie Haden Liberation Music Orchestra at the Blue Note. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) If you have never seen Cecil Taylor, even if he isn't your cup of tea, you should go see him. He is amazing live. Edited October 21, 2008 by Hardbopjazz Quote
Aggie87 Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 Thanks for all of the suggestions! If I were going by myself (or had a more "veteran" listener with me), I'd love to see Cecil Taylor. I'm just not sure my friend would enjoy that one so much. I'm interested in sharing some of the music I like with her to see how she'll respond. Plus, I don't get to NYC very often obviously, so I'd love to see something I'd enjoy as well. Maybe the Cecil would be a good test to see how she can handle things! I think I'm narrowing it down to either the Charlie Haden gig or the Blakey tribute. GA - I like Bireli Lagrene's Gypsy Project recordings - you should check them out if you're interested in current Reinhart-style music. Quote
kh1958 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 In a week or so, All About Jazz New York for November will be available online, and it has a daily concert listing in the back which is fairly complete. In addition, when you get to New York, buy a copy of Time Out New York. Between the two of them, you should have a pretty complete list of the alternatives--there could be something more interesting to you in some venue other than the mainstay jazz clubs. Quote

JETman Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 If you can make it into the city one day sooner, Dave Liebman's group is playing at the 55 Bar on Friday, Nov. 7th: 55bar.com Quote

JETman Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Get there early, it's tiny. That it is!!! You would need to get there at least an hour before showtime. I was there last year to hear a great set from David Binney's band. This is his "home" base. Quote

Enjoy yerself Aggie! Thanks! If I were going to be there longer, I'd love to meet up with all of the NYC area board members! Unfortunately this trip isn't going to be longer. But if the relationship works out (and it has so far), I think I may be visiting up there a little more often. Quote
JETman Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 Hope all goes well. If you get a chance to stay longer in the future, let us know. Quote
david weiss Posted October 22, 2008 Report Posted October 22, 2008 The Blakey tribute also has Charles Fambrough and the great Louis Hayes on drums. The music will be from the record Golden Boy which Bu always said was his favorite record. If you don't know the record, it from 1963 or 64 and features the Jazz Messengers at the time (with Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard) with the addition of James Spaulding, Julius Watkins, Bill Barber (on tuba), and supposedly Pat Patrick on baritone sax (according to Curtis Fuller). The music is all music from the play Golden Boy, which had just opened on Broadway, arranged by Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton and Curtis Fuller. The arrangements (especially Wayne's) are beautiful and I am painstakingly transcribing all this music for this gig. I'm sure this music has never been performed live and I thought it a good thing to present this stuff as, like I said earlier, the writing is really wonderful and I think it should be heard. Quote

I've seen a couple of these Davis Weiss tribute shows at Iridium ( like I said, it's not my favorite venue) like the Wayne Shorter. Not inspiring, or to my taste. Is this really necessary? You know I'm a fellow board member and you have done this shit before, shouldn't you give a fellow board member a break. I come here to get away from this sort of crap. I don't come here and say Mancini is not Mancini without Mancini when you mention that gig or Getz/Gilberto is not..... You get the idea.... Wouldn't silence be more civilized. Quote
Jim Alfredson Posted October 23, 2008 Report Posted October 23, 2008 To play devil's advocate, I didn't read anything malicious in marcello's post, rather an explanation of his opinion. Aggie, I might point out, is still considering going to the gig anyway, so marcello's opinion obviously didn't matter much. Are we above criticism? Just asking. Quote
Aggie87 Posted November 6, 2008 Author Report Posted November 6, 2008 (edited) Well, we will be seeing the Golden Boy/Art Blakey show on Saturday night after all. I'm really looking forward to this! David, I will try to say hello after the set if I get a chance. If any other board members happen to be at the 8:30 show I'd love to meet you as well! Edited November 6, 2008 by Aggie87 Quote
Free For All Posted November 6, 2008 Report Posted November 6, 2008 Have a ball Agg! I'm extremely jealous! Quote
bertrand Posted November 7, 2008 Report Posted November 7, 2008 (edited) Man, I'm really sorry I'm going to have to miss this, but I already went out of town last week-end for the Clifford Brown symposium in Philly. I know from previous concerts that David has put together that this is going to be great. David - are there any similarities between Wayne's arrangement of 'This Is The Life' from Golden Boy and the version that appeared later on Lee Morgan's Standards (which also had Wayne) - I assume that arrangement is by Duke Pearson? Obviously there are some differences in the instrumentation, but would it have been possible to use Wayne's arrangement with adjustments made for the instrumentation, or was it simpler to come up with a new instrumentation? Lee is smokin' on the Colpix version. Bertrand. Edited November 7, 2008 by bertrand Quote
