Disney is just plain stupid....

High On Fire - as a band name you wouldn't really think that's TOO offensive, right? This happened last night at a gig in Orlando (from another board):

High On Fire was not allowed to play because of Disney. Opeth's frontman made a comment about it "High On Fire couldn't be here tonight... because of their name, isn't that retarded?"

Members from Opeth and Baroness wore High On Fire shirts.

Disney wouldn't let a band play because of their NAME!!!! Lame, ridiculous and somehow mildly frightening.

:rfr

A few years back, the then-mayor of Toronto (a woman) wouldn't allow a local little suburban pop band to play at City Hall square because of their name. The ensuing tussle brought them more publicity than they could have ever generated on their own. Bare Naked Ladies is pretty well known now. ("Thanks, Your Worship!")

Sounds like something that might happen in Alaska...

I guess they think it's "pro drug use" or something. But honestly, it's basically a variation on "drunk with power"...you could look at it as "high on loud music"...which of course is kind of anti-drug.

Anyway, Disney are morons. It was a House Of Blues venue evidently.

Friends of mine are in a band based in Muncie Indiana. They were to play a Muncie festival and be on a CD compilation sponsored by Budweiser. The track submitted, and approved by the show organizers, is called "Balls City," an affectionate nickname the locals have for Muncie (Ball State University is here and the Ball Corp. who make cans and whatnot, used to be the biggest local employer.) The show organizers especially liked the Muncie-ness of the track and put it first on the album. Budweiser was not amused, however. Based solely on the title of that song, they threatened to pull out of the festival if it wasn't yanked from the CD. The official line was they didn't want their corporation to be associated with "Balls City." So, the CD ended up not happening (but Bud still sponsored the show) all because of the title of this one song that Budweiser didn't want to be associated with.

Want to hear the punch line?

All this controversy was over a song title, while the name of the band was completely overlooked. The band name: The Cocaine Wolfs. It would appear Budweiser was ok with being associated with an illegal substance, as they never once mentioned the band name being an issue. But the word "balls" used in a song title in a non-sexual setting, and the meaning of which probably everyone at the festival would get, was just too much for 'em. Now, ain't that a bitch?

now there's a thread i'd like to read, if we could include a few jazz bands too. decades ago when i was still performing, we'd sometimes announce the name of the band before a break, choosing something we thought was oh-so clever. among my favorites were chuck roast and his prime cuts and mortimer snerd and the milquetoast orchestra, featuring the dulcet tones of miss claire voyant.
