ghost of miles Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 (edited) Anybody else seen this yet? I've caught the shorter version on CNN a few times yesterday and today: Pepsi "My Generation" ad I really like it. Has a kind of visceral excitement that seems to go with the cultural moment. Randy Twizzle Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Pepsi commercials have always seemed to capture the cultural moment. Quote
JSngry Posted January 20, 2009 Report Posted January 20, 2009 Funny, the "conventional wisdom" back in my youth was that Pepsi = Republican, Coke = Democrat, at least as far as political sympathies went. Didn't Nixon spend part of the mid-60s working as an attorney for Pepsi? So yeah, "Pepsi Generation", right, uh-huh, whatever. That said, I prefer Pepsi to Coke, always have, and I really like their new packaging. No illusions, that's all I'm saying. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 pepsi always seemed too sweet. coke fan here. Quote
.:.impossible Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Never knew a soul who drank pepsi til I moved to NC. For obvious reasons, it is a popular soft drink around here. Still too sweet for me. Quote

I'm about 10 years behind you, JS, but as a kid I always thought it was the reverse--or at least that Pepsi was hipper and Coke was kinda square. Maybe I just succumbed to the marketing hype? Lifelong Coke drinker myself, for the same reason as Chuck. I got hooked when I was little on those six-and-a-half ounce bottles that my grandmother used to stock in her fridge. But I still like that commercial. Quote
JSngry Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Wow, I must have a unique oral chemistry (yeah, ok, consider that one a gift...), but Pepsi has always tasted less sweet to me than Coke. Then again, since the introduction of Nutra Sweet, I much prefer diet sodas. Don't find them at all bitter, but find the regulars too sweet, too sticky. Quote

Shawn Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 The ad is okay...Pepsi sucks. Diet Coke is da bomb. Quote

Well, that dovetails nicely with the fact that my other grandmother (the ragtime piano player) stocked 7-Up--she's one of the hippest ladies I know! Never did dig Sprite. These days I'm more apt to down a Reed's Ginger Brew than anything else, though. Edited January 21, 2009 by ghost of miles Quote
Big Al Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Wow, I must have a unique oral chemistry (yeah, ok, consider that one a gift...), but Pepsi has always tasted less sweet to me than Coke. Same here. Lifelong Pepsi drinker here. In fact, if we're somewhere that doesn't have Pepsi, I'll order Dr. Pepper instead. Coke is just TOO sweet for me. Quote
T.D. Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Never thought about the politics (they're both made by huge corporations, which probably donate to both parties), but count me in as preferring Coke / finding Pepsi too sweet. Not dogmatic, though, and will drink either. Have seriously cut down on soda, except in the summer during/after exercise (bike riding), for which purpose my preferred brand is Mountain Dew, a Pepsi product. Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) Also, doesn't the new Pepsi logo somewhat resemble the Obama campaign logo? Not like anybody would be trying to make a buck off the Obama zeitgeist or anything... Edited January 21, 2009 by ghost of miles Quote

.:.impossible Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 I have to admit, I noticed the new logo a few weeks ago. I think its bad-ass. I wouldn't have known about the smile thing though... I really don't drink soft drinks at all anymore though. I had a Coke over Christmas with my Grandfather. Quote
BruceH Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 The add is sorta cool, but it's already making me mightily sick of "My Generation," which is a shame. Quote
BruceH Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Also, doesn't the new Pepsi logo somewhat resemble the Obama campaign logo? That's the first thing I thought when I saw the new logo...! Quote
Jazzmoose Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Interesting. I've never noticed either being sweeter than the other. The main difference to me is the aftertaste. Coke seems to have an aftertaste of citrus to me, whereas Pepsi's aftertaste is somewhat similar to the way roses smell. Yuck. My choice? Hey, I'm cheap: Safeway's caffiene free diet cola. Maybe I didn't view enough ads... Quote

Shawn Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Thanks to CSI and the various commercials...I'll probably never be able to listen to The Who again. Quote
AllenLowe Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 historically Pepsi was one of the first US corporations to hire African Americans in executve positions, and not as token blacks - so it is deserving of our respect - Quote
umum_cypher Posted January 21, 2009 Report Posted January 21, 2009 Call me a cynic, but I find the ad cynical in the extreme. I'm with the Youtube poster who says this: 'The only thing that is "amazing" about this video is how it angles to boomers, and attempts to pick up this generation in the wake. The joke being that it was the Boomers that criminalized much of everything shown in this video. They are 10x more oppressive than the great generation, ANY DAY!!! Trust a man who went to Normandy, fear a man that went to the jungle... The people on the sand will never be right.' When I say I'm with him, I mean the general gist, not its expression, or its syntax, or indeed anything beneath the first line, by which time he seems to be descending into his own private hell. He also seems to confuse the Who with the Stones elsewhere in the thread, but he's an ideas man more than anything. The image of the guy carrying a can of Pepsi through the crumbling Berlin Wall was particularly gruesome I thought, an entirely Reaganite piece of subliminal history (re)writing. Still, as far as gruesome goes, it's nowhere near this Quote
ghost of miles Posted January 21, 2009 Author Report Posted January 21, 2009 (edited) Here's another ad that was airing yesterday--Starbucks' "volunteer-five-hours" commercial: Very 70s' vibe, and also seeming (to me, anyway) like it's attempting to ride the Obama zeitgeist. It actually isn't that bad of an idea though, if you can bribe people to do volunteer work by giving them free coffee...more power to 'em. Quote
