Greetings! I've just joined, so have nothing to say for the moment

But if you feel like having a look at a few pictures of Marco Eneidi from his recent Russian tour, here they are. Seeing him live is my most recent positive experience of free music.

As far as Dunmall, I only heard Ghostly Thoughts and Hit and Run (and liked the latter more, but it's just me - for the rest of the world GT wins

I too prefer Hit and Run to Ghostly Thoughts - Dunmall is definitely stretching more here. And I really enjoy his insane bagpipes. John Butcher is no slough either.

I picked up a used Paul Dunmall disc very inexpensively a few weeks back:

Cocteau's Ghost is a limited edition cdr on Dunmall's DUNS label, recorded in 1997.  Dunmall plays tenor and electronic bagpipes, the sound of which, I felt, takes some getting used to.  All tracks are duets with Tony Irving on drums.  Once I got past the unique timber of the bagpipes I really enjoyed this disc.  I will have to explore more Dunmall at some point.  Other than Mujician I have not really heard much of his work.

I still don't have a lot of Dunmall outside of Mujician in my collection, but I would still definitely recommed this disc to everyone here, if you can find a copy.

I'm now listening to Peter Brötzmann – Dare Devil, recorded live in Tokyo the day before Funny Rat was recorded. This disc also features Hano, as well as an electric bass and electric guitar, which brings the sound to a more sedate, less "Laswell-y" Last Exit region.

The disc is ok, but not one of my favorite discs of his. (on further listening I'm thinking my initial comment was generous. Don't go out of your way to track down a copy of this one.)

I've had this one: 4084 MARKUS EICHENBERGER "Domino Concept for Orchestra" (2001) on the list for a while, so would most likely grab a copy.

Excellent, though the two halves are discombobulatingly different. One is very, very noisy, one is very very quiet; you can probably guess which.

OK, but I like their set on the Freedom of the City 2002 Small Groups disc a mite better.

Terrific playing. The sound is a bit sludgy on the 1st 2/3rds of it due to being sourced from an LP in the absence of a tape (& there's a weird tinnitus effect on one track). The last part of it is much clearer as it comes from a later tape. Despite the sonic flaws the playing is enough to make this well worth the trouble.

4071 JOHN RUSSELL "From Next to Last" (2001-2)

OK, but it didn't grab me strongly. I gave it to another critic who played guitar but though he liked it he didn't review it. I thought it sounded rather like Bailey on an off-day, but that may have been a superficial listen.

Good though the sheer fussiness & sameyness of it get to me... if you're a Smith fan it's essential though.

A useful/fun/interesting survey, heavier on the "jazz" playing than usual for an Emanem release. Documents a number of associations, e.g. with Bob Cobbing, which aren't really available on disc elsewhere. You get recordings from as far back as the 1950s (with Coxhill on tenor, including some British R&B).

4208 TONY BIANCO & PAUL DUNMALL "Hour Glass" (2002) 2-CD set

I found this pretty tedious but hardcore sax/drum blowout fans will probably take to it like ducks to water.

4210 freedom of the city 2002 "small groups" 2-CD set

The festival was hit & miss but this set collects virtually all the really good concerts (mostly from a single day). My favourite thing is the 15-minute Roger Smith piece. Strong Evan Parker/John Russell duo too, one of the better latterday EP things I've heard.

Though I enjoy all of them, I would recommend Fixations (14) first, then The Gentle Harm of the Bourgeoisie, I guess, and then the other two.

Foxes Fox and The Ayes Have It are prime Evan Parker in strong tenor mode - slight edge the The Ayes - great trio set with Rogers & Muir - and the 1991 set is a quartet with Wierbos, Rogers and the *great* Mark Sanders - Sanders is spectacular throught the 36 minute improvisation - Parker stciks to tenor on this piece - he alternates between his two horns on the ealier session - great sound and tons of energy throughout

Well it's only "composed" in the sense John Zorn's Cobra is.

4208 TONY BIANCO & PAUL DUNMALL "Hour Glass" (2002) 2-CD set

The worst record of both men together or not. But acclaimed everywhere. Could define, in a audio dictionnary the term "noodling". And I like a lot both men, usually.

Well, I gave it a so-so review at the time......I should probably have just flatly panned it, except that I knew that many Dunmallites would probably like it anyway. -- Worth mentioning that the rest of the personnel is: Marcio Mattos & Paul Rogers (one on each disc).

I don't have the CD anymore, but if I remember well, it was a little more elaborated than that.

I also review books and used to do films until some time ago.
