Looks like a very hip session. I'm interested! Me, too, I'd be very curious to hear of (1) the sound quality; and (2) music quality. Is it a 24 bit remastering? Quote
Guest youmustbe Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 Hmmm. Interesting. I was there every Monday night. I remember walking , no running to 1st avenue to bus stop because I had been mugged one night between sets of Lee at Slugs' and Port Of Call which had Tolliver's band. Quote
chewy-chew-chew-bean-benitez Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 my friend who i was talkin abot in the other thread, also told me, u would reherse from ten in the morning till 5 at night, then go to slugs and play from 7pm till 3 in the morning Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 Sorry, I was out all weekend. Haven't put it in the player yet; will do so tonight. Quote
rostasi Posted April 13, 2009 Report Posted April 13, 2009 Narrowcasted the whole set three times within the past week or so. Favorable comments from listeners. No probs with any of the tracks. Of course there's no "remastering" 'cause...you know...it was never "mastered" in the first place. Surprisingly good considering the source with typical attention by Transparency in getting the best out of what they have. Makes me want to go back and listen again to the Horseshow Tavern discs. I still wish Michael would get some kind of proper webpage to sell/promote these items on his label instead of that godawful MySpace page. Also, I've noticed some online comments concerning great photos of the performances, but all I can see are two - the front and back cover shots, so I'm not sure what that's all about. Anyway, great set of performances for a great price of a great bunch of musicians. ® --- Now playing: Sun Ra - Live at Slug's Saloon: Discipline #? - the Shadow World - Discipline #? (Organ Prelude, Theme, Alto, Applause) Quote
Stefan Wood Posted April 14, 2009 Report Posted April 14, 2009 Played a little bit of disc 2 -- the sound is definitely "live," as in audio tape crunchiness, but the band is very present, not murky. Really lively versions of their repertoire. Quote
NavSJ Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 Picked it up at Dusty Groove Records and also noticed that there is another 28 CD live box set of Sun Ra's from the same company that documents 11 ENTIRE concerts from 1980 or so in Detroit. a 28 CD box set for $78. Holey Moley. Anybody here hear of this 28 CDer? Quote
jazzbo Posted April 16, 2009 Report Posted April 16, 2009 That 28 disc box is a CDR box if that makes a difference to you. Sound is okay on that one (haven't yet been home to hear this new one so I can't really compare). Performances are very good, if you like this you'll probably like that. Quote

The guys at Dusty Groove said that the 28 CD box set used to be CDRs, but are now proper manufactured CDs. What exactly is the difference? Would the fact that they are now proper CDs and CDRs mean that they are properly mastered and sound better? Edited April 16, 2009 by NavSJ Quote

Holey Moley. Anybody here hear of this 28 CDer? I've got that set and played it all through once. Now I go back and listen to my favorite parts. It is from a series of concerts at the Detroit Jazz Center, a small room in a downtown storefront, which took place between Christmas and New Year's at the end of 1980. I saw Air at the Detroit Jazz Center that fall. It was a very intimate place to see a concert. It was so small that we all witnessed Fred Hopkins urging Steve McCall to put down his big bowl of chicken or tuna salad and come on to the bandstand, while McCall shoveled several more forkfulls into his mouth. The 28 CD set has a lot of great sections. There are also many of the endless chanting vocals which seemed better when you saw Sun Ra live, as there was often something theatrical going on while the chants were repeated. A rabid Ra fan will need to have the 28 CD set. Quote

Theoretically the CDs will hold up to abuse better, may last another lifetime. . . . When I bought the set directly from Transparency in cdr form it was about thirty dollars cheaper. Believe it or not. Edited April 16, 2009 by jazzbo Quote
