The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 Really, is there anything in the Prestige/Riverside/Jazzland/Fantasy catalogs of much value that didn't make it onto CD and stay in print for a number of years? Paul Bryant - Somethin's happening Paul Bryant - Groove time Willis Jackson - Swivelhips Willis Jackson - Gator's groove Willis Jackson - Star bag Willis Jackson - Gatorade Willis Jackson - In my solitude Willis Jackson - Really groovin' Willis Jackson - Shuckin' Willis Jackson - Neapolitan nights Freddie McCoy - Lonely avenue Freddie McCoy - Spider man Freddie McCoy - Funk drops Freddie McCoy - Peas & rice Freddie McCoy - Beans & greens Freddie McCoy - Soul yogi Freddie McCoy - Listen here That's ever LP McCoy made for Prestige - NOT ONE CD issued! Billie Poole - Sermonette Gene Ammons - half of Night lights Gene Ammons - Free again Gene Ammons - Blue groove (not Blues groove) Gene Ammons - My way Kenny Burrell - Up the street, round the corner, down the block Charles Earland - Soul story Johnny Lytle - People and love Johnny Lytle - The soulful rebel Jack McDuff - quite a bit but difficult to tell - at least not Walk on by Don Patterson - Soul happening Don Patterson - Satisfaction Don Patterson - Mellow soul Don Patterson - Holiday soul Bobby Timmons - Holiday soul Bobby Timmons - Chicken & dumplin's Trudi Pitts - Bucketful of soul Trudi Pitts - Excitement of Shirley Scott - Drag 'em out Shirley Scott - Scottie Shirley Scott - Plays Horace Silver Shirley Scott - Like cozy Shirley Scott - Scottie plays the Duke Shirley Scott - Happy talk Leon Spencer - Where I'm comin' from Leon Spencer - Bad walkin' woman Sonny Stitt - Primitivo soul Sonny Stitt - Pow! May not be important to Hard Bop fans but they're important in the context of Soul Jazz. PS In addition, there are numerous albums that were not issued by Fantasy but only came out on JVC in Japan or Ace labels in Britain. Some of the JVC titles may be included above but no one told me they were out MG Quote
bertrand Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 Here are some from the list I would pick up in a heartbeat: The two Bobby Timmons' Buddy Terry's Natural Soul (with Larry Young and Woody Shaw!) Shirley Scott plays Horace Silver Isn't Like Cozy on CD? Bertrand. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 Isn't Like Cozy on CD? Bertrand. Yes, now I've checked the old Fantasy catalogue, I can see it was issued. Must try to find a copy of that one. MG Quote
bertrand Posted September 27, 2009 Report Posted September 27, 2009 Newbury comics has it for $9.95, but do they ship overseas? Bertrand. Quote

Not much that will keep me up at night, but there are quite a few titles there that would be nice to have. Thanks for the list. Quote
Chas Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Really, is there anything in the Prestige/Riverside/Jazzland/Fantasy catalogs of much value that didn't make it onto CD and stay in print for a number of years? Johnny Lytle - People and love Johnny Lytle - The soulful rebel Johnny "Hammond" Smith - What's going on MG The Soulful Rebel is my favorite Lytle record , with People And Love not far behind . Two tracks from it have appeared on samplers , but that's it . I expected/hoped that Ace/BGP would do a 2-on-1 CD reissue of these to complement the one they did for his Tuba albums , but alas , not yet . Perhaps their Fantasy license has expired . Vibes fans know that Lytle , like Freddie McCoy , is inexplicably poorly represented on CD . Smith's What's Going On is one of my favorites of his as well . His workout on Gaye's classic is fabulous ; he builds slowly , finds the groove , and then rides it for nearly ten minutes before the pots come down . The recording was done at a time when Smith's conception/style was arguably at its most individual , before his move into Earland-ville . Lord knows I loved and financially supported Fantasy's reissue efforts , but I'd guess there might be as many as a couple hundred albums they never got around to reissuing . Off the top of my head I can think of a couple dozen of those digital-age orphans that I own and thus find musically valuable . I would make a snide comment about vinyl-phobes missing out on plenty of good jazz but for the fact that a lot of this stuff is available in digital format in those devil's workshops known as jazz blogs . So I'll save any such comments for the dwindling band of doughty anti-bloggers instead . Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted September 28, 2009 Report Posted September 28, 2009 Yes, Ace's license expired at the same time as ZYX's - I think ZYX was the license-holder for a large consortium of companies in different European countries (and Australia). MG Quote
Tom in RI Posted September 29, 2009 Author Report Posted September 29, 2009 One of the sad things about this is that now when I see a Concord Group cd, I assume it will be available cheaply in relatively short order. In fact its not unknown that I'll see the most recent issue (Keepnews) of a cd in the same bins as the earlier now cutout issue. Even if I suspect that the Keepnews edition will be an upgrade I figure I can wait and get it cheap next year. Quote
Tom in RI Posted December 22, 2009 Author Report Posted December 22, 2009 I am now seeing deleted CMG titles in Staples stores in my area, $8.99, I know I will see them cheaper at Newberry's, only a matter of time. Quote

Correct - last week I was told that ZYX originally was founded by a major figure among German distributors, Hermann Mikulski, who had a close relationship to Norman Granz. Mikulski had wanted to buy Pablo, but Granz sold it to Fantasy and arranged a distribution deal for Mikulski, who then set up that network of distributors for Fantasy all over Europe. That disttribution deal was terminated when Fantasy was bought by Concord, who had a distribution deal with Universal. There are still more interesting titles from the Riverside and Fantasy catalogues that never were on CD or only in Japan - some that come to my mind: Riverside Jazz Stars plays Music from Keane several Cal Tjader Fantasy titles from the 1970's Juan Tirado Mambo Band (Prestige) Gildo Mahones (Prestige) Edited December 23, 2009 by mikeweil Quote

Except that his first name is Bernhard and not Hermann. At various times through the 80s (and beyond) you saw German pressings of Prestige/OJC etc. releases marked as being distributed by "Mikulski GmbH", Mikulski-ZYX", "ZYX" etc. Quote

I have to admit I didn't quite remember and guessed - Bernhard is correct. From Wikipedia: "The company was called Pop-Import Bernhard Mikulski up to 1992, when it was renamed to ZYX Music."
