tranemonk Posted November 20, 2009 Report Posted November 20, 2009 Mine is in the back of the booklet instead of on the inside cover.... Number 248..... Weird. This is likely to be released to stores sooner or later with that huge "run" number. Did you look on your invoice to see if there is a "number"? Quote

He says he will. 'Course, he's in his 80s, and I wouldn't put it past him to open it up and listen to it and then forget he was going to give it to me. Might have to wrestle him for it! gregmo Quote
J.A.W. Posted November 22, 2009 Report Posted November 22, 2009 Could someone tell me how many "tracks-with-organ/celeste" the set has? Last time I looked the website's discography didn't give any details. Thanks Can anyone answer this question yet? Quote

He doesn't know exactly, but he thinks there are less than 10 tracks with celeste and maybe half of the set is with organ. No set for me, I'm afraid Quote

tranemonk Posted November 23, 2009 Report Posted November 23, 2009 I don't like organ too.. but this set seems far too intriguing to me to pass up... Isn't that what an accurate discography is all about? Let's see if I have this straight: Half of this 7 CD set is on organ, but not one of the 5 provided music samples has organ? What's up with that? ghost of miles Posted November 25, 2009 Author Report Posted November 25, 2009 I can understand why the presence of organ would deter J.A.W. from buying this set. That said, I'm nearly through the first two discs of it, and the organ, when it does appear, is generally unobtrusive and doesn't ruin Bing's singing or the general mood of the music for me. It's just such a pleasure to hear Crosby singing these songs in a small, intimate, somewhat-jazzy setting. If you like Nat King Cole or Charles Brown's late-1940s vocal trio sides, I think you'd like this set as well. Quote

BruceH Posted November 25, 2009 Report Posted November 25, 2009 The new Mosaic catalog just came in the mail yesterday, with Crosby on the cover. Nice! Quote

So far the organ playing and sound is as David describes. From what I've heard so far a very George Shearing Quintet vibe and feel to the arranging and playing. Amazing sound on this set! crisp Posted November 26, 2009 Report Posted November 26, 2009 You know, I've been dreaming of a set of these sessions ever since reading about them in Will Friedwald's book. Never suggested it to Mosaic because I didn't think they would go for it. I'm really pleased to see so many on here as excited about the set as I am. Makes me think I should suggest a few other "pop" vocalists to Mosaic. Julie London, anybody? Nancy Wilson? Quote
tranemonk Posted November 28, 2009 Report Posted November 28, 2009 Now that I've given the entire set a spin over the last 4 days.. I have to say.... :excl: :tup  :D There are some gorgeous ballads on this set... The organ is non-obtrusive... It really is a remarkable set.... Quote

I'm not really that interested in either of those singers, and their work has been pretty well represented on cd. If Mosaic could find a large chunk of their music not on cd yet, yeah, that's a good project. Possibly sell. Would raise a lot of eyebrows of non-vocal jazz Mosaic buyers though, as this Crosby set does. Quote

Would raise a lot of eyebrows of non-vocal jazz Mosaic buyers though, as this Crosby set does. I've been afraid to try this set, because I'm just afraid it will be too "pop" for my taste. I took a leap of faith on the Peggy Lee/June Christie set and bought it last fall, and regretted it, it just was too milquetoast for me. Quote
jazzbo Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 I'd say if the samples don't tempt you pass it by. It's jazzier than the Lee/Christy in my opinion, but that may not be enough. Quote
Dave James Posted December 6, 2009 Report Posted December 6, 2009 I'm enjoying this set, but I must say I would have preferred it without the roller rink organ. Lush Life - Just one man's opinion, but if you didn't like the Peggy Lee / June Christie, I don't think the Crosby set is for you. Quote
