A Lark Ascending Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Jim Hall's Commitment was one of my earliest jazz records and I still love it. No idea why it has never had a reissue where Jim Hall Live has. A very different album - where the 'Live' is no frills, 'Commitment' deliberately uses different musicians/textures from track to track to create a varied but highly 'produced' tapestry. Maybe it was judged a hodge-podge. But it hooked me. 'Lament for a Fallen Matador' (the Albinoni Adagio) with Art Farmer is gorgeous, very much in the vein of his 'Concerto' version of Rodriguez. Bev, doesn't Peter Friedman's post #2 say that he does have it on CD? And his follow-up says it was on Horizon itself, not another label. Perhaps Peter can give some catalog numbers for that issue... Jim Hall - Commitment - A & M CD 0811 Well. I'll be! I've obviously not been looking hard enough. Looking at the price tag on Amazon.co.uk it looks like it has not had a release here in the UK. Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 There were also two albums on Horizon by some pop-fusion band that Jimmy Owens was in...can't remember the name or the music. I have one of them - just called "Jimmy Owens". A nice version of "Caravan" - well, it's all OK, really, but I hardly ever feel like playing it. Kenny Barron, Chris White, Brian Brake and a selection of guitarists. Dr John made one for Horizon - "Tango palace" (740). Another one I don't feel inclined to play more often than once every several years. Alvin Robinson is on guitar - the reason I bought it. MG Quote
sidewinder Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 (edited) I remember that they caused a bit of a stir when the first batch was released in the UK (bought the first 2 Jones/Lewis LPs). Fold out sleeves with lots of session data and even transcripts of some of the music and the Left-To-Right stereo spread by musician on a chart. Very impressive at the time ! JSngry Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Ok, my bad, the band was Karma & Jimmy Owens was not in it. http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&a...11:kpfixqr5ldse Quote
sidewinder Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 (edited) There is also a Billy Hart LP -- ENHANCE -- that was issued on CD. Nice date: Dewey Redman, Marvin “Hannibal” Peterson, Eddie Henderson, Oliver Lake, Don Pullen, Buster Williams, and Dave Holland in various groupings. Bought that one on CD back in 1990 and agree it is excellent. The 3 Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra releases are: 'Suite For Pops' 'New Life (dedicated to Max Gordon)' 'Live In Munich' Edited November 11, 2009 by sidewinder Quote

SP 727 ('The Golden Number') is the highest one I've got. Don't recall ever seeing any of those titles from 728 onwards in the jazz racks over here (maybe they were filed on the top shelf in plain brown paper bags ). Quote
felser Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Full label discography here: http://www.bsnpubs.com/aandm/aandm26-horizon.html From 728 on looks like post-dinner party... And truth be told, a lot of the stuff pre-728 never lived up to it's billing. Very disappointing label overall. I did like the Desmond and Hall live dates. But the Liebman, Fortune, etc. were really disappointments at the time. Quote
JSngry Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Agree about the Liebmans, not about the Fortunes. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Do you guys think Burt and Angie were at the dinner party? Quote
kh1958 Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Agree about the Liebmans, not about the Fortunes. I recall Sonny Fortune's Awakening as a first rate recording--though I haven't listened to the LP in many years. I also really liked the Ira Sullivan LP. Quote
JSngry Posted November 11, 2009 Report Posted November 11, 2009 Do you guys think Burt and Angie were at the dinner party? No doubt, probably doing a 3-way in the kitchen with Peggy Lipton while Quincy fucked Horizon in the den. Quote

My feelings for most of the releases on the label when they were released, ranged from curious interest to much liking. Quote
BillF Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I have two Thad Jones/Mel Lewis LPs on Horizon: New Life and Suite for Pops. Beautifully presented albums! Quote
king ubu Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I have only got a few of these (the Billy Hart, one of the Hadens, Jim Hall Live, Cherry's Brown Rice, Brubeck/Desmond), but got another one recently, and I think it's pretty good: Dr. John's "City Lights" (reissued in Universal's "Verve Originals" series). marcello Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 This is a really great example of Thad Jones' style of playing, and Mel's no slouch either! Really well recorded too. In fact, I'm going to put this one on today! The Thad Jones & Mel Lewis Quartet 01. But Not For Me 02. This Can't Be Love 03. Autumn Leaves 04. What Is This Thing Thad Jones - Cornet Mel Lewis - Drums Rufus Reid - Bass Harold Danko - Piano Recorded at the Airliner Lounge, Miami, Florida, September 24, 1977 Quote
king ubu Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 Would an A&M Jones/Lewis select be a possibility for Mosaic? Or is that material out of reach for them? (I'd think no since it belongs to Universal, but what do I know...) Quote
sidewinder Posted November 12, 2009 Report Posted November 12, 2009 I have two Thad Jones/Mel Lewis LPs on Horizon: New Life and Suite for Pops. Beautifully presented albums! Yes, superb presentation. I think I picked my copies up in that shop in Birmingham that specialised in big band jazz but can't recall what they were called. That would be 1977/78 ish. The 'Live In Munich' LP I picked up many years later (along with both Sonny Fortunes, The Thad/Mel Quartet, Jim Hall 'Live', Haden and a couple of others I can't quite recall at this moment..) Quote
JohnS Posted November 18, 2009 Report Posted November 18, 2009 Beautifully produced albums and excellent pressings. Sold few over the years, still have both the Fortune's though I'm not sure I want to keep them. I don't go for all those bells and things these days. Quote

Though I'm not a huge fan of the record, admittedly the Italian issue of Brown Rice looks pretty cool. Quote
