tranemonk Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 http://www.worldsrecords.com/cgi-bin/storeR.cgi?specific=itemcode&phrase=65202 Do you think this is a rip-off of the 3CD set Transcriptions set that came out a few years ago? This one - http://www.amazon.com/Transcriptions-Nat-King-Cole-Trio/dp/B000BM6AMY/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1265754346&sr=8-1 Doesn't look the same... Anybody got any help on this one...? Quote
vajerzy Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Dunno- but I can always use more Nat Cole! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 The Capitol/BN transcription set covers 1946/50, so this seems to be earlier. Quote
jazzbo Posted February 9, 2010 Report Posted February 9, 2010 Likely to be material I already have so I'm not going or it. But I love Nat at the piano. Quote
sjarrell Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Haven't checked against my discs, but this looks like the really early stuff Naxos has out everywhere but the US. Quote
brownie Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 There was this earlier 4CD set on VJC which had most of the material. Quote
tranemonk Posted February 10, 2010 Author Report Posted February 10, 2010 (edited) Thanks Brownie - Do you have this set? How's the sound quality? There's some interesting (critical but helpful) comments here... http://apileocole.alongthehall.com/chatter/chat1938.html http://apileocole.alongthehall.com/chatter/chat1938.html#session1 There was this earlier 4CD set on VJC which had most of the material. I think it's mostly for completists, but your mileage may vary. Quote
brownie Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 Thanks Brownie - Do you have this set? How's the sound quality? I have had it for suite some time and have enjoyed it whenever I need to hear happy music. The set also offers numerous samples of King Cole's piano talents. Doug Pomeroy took care of the transfers/engineering so the sound is excellent! Quote
jazzbo Posted February 10, 2010 Report Posted February 10, 2010 It took me a while but I finally got that set too, with the help of a member here. I like it! There are better Cole collections, granted. I'm a big fan of the Trio though. Much prefer the Trio Cole to the Singing Star Cole. Quote
ghost of miles Posted February 13, 2010 Report Posted February 13, 2010 There was this earlier 4CD set on VJC which had most of the material. So is this new set a mix of the one above and the MacGregor transcriptions? Quote
brownie Posted February 14, 2010 Report Posted February 14, 2010 It is. The new seems to include the early 1938-1940 sides that were on the JVC 4CD set plus the 1943-1945 McGregor material by the King Cole Trio that was reissued early on several Laserlight CDs. Quote
tranemonk Posted February 14, 2010 Author Report Posted February 14, 2010 The problem I'm having with this set.. is the plethora of backup vocals as described in the link I posted earlier.. In general I DON'T think they work. I hated them with the Dinah Washington set.. and have basically dismissed them... If the earlier review is right.. Regrettably I might have to pass this one up.... Now is someone's who's got the earlier set.. can tell me that these backup vocals constitute less than 10% of the set... then maybe... but somehow I doubt it.... Quote
brownie Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Now is someone's who's got the earlier set.. can tell me that these backup vocals constitute less than 10% of the set... then maybe... but somehow I doubt it.... The VJC 4CD set includes 104 tunes. Some 20 of those have additional vocals by non King Cole-trio members! Quote
tranemonk Posted February 15, 2010 Author Report Posted February 15, 2010 Thanks Brownie!!! I'm still on the fence about this one..... Oh... I thought JSP was one of the "bad" labels (e.g., no royalties)...? :beee: Now is someone's who's got the earlier set.. can tell me that these backup vocals constitute less than 10% of the set... then maybe... but somehow I doubt it.... The VJC 4CD set includes 104 tunes. brownie Posted February 15, 2010 Report Posted February 15, 2010 Oh... I thought JSP was one of the "bad" labels (e.g., no royalties)...? :beee: Nothing 'bad' about JSP as far as European laws are concerned! Now if you tell me that UK is not really part of EU, you may have a point! and probably some problems with several UK forum members Quote
