A Lark Ascending Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Regal Zonophone (well known for its Salvation Army and Joe Cocker recordings ) and Marc Boland/T Rex, Neil Ardley and Cosmic Eye Dream Sequence ! I think one of my earliest singles - 'Neanderthal Man' by 'Hotlegs' (they went on to become 10CC) - was on Regal Zonophone. Also 'Brontosaurus' by 'The Move'. Must have been my prehistoric musical phase! Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 I have a cassette of somebody on the Sue label, I think Jimmy McGriff, which is an EMI product. Ah yes, I forgot about Sue. It was acquired by UA in the late sixties or somewhen. MG Quote
BruceH Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Who? EMI! Always thought that song sounded suspiciously like The Modern Lovers' "Roadrunner." Quote
BruceH Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Well, what do you expect? They only did it cuz of fame. Quote
rostasi Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 Actually, Roadrunner was often part of their set. Quote
Fer Urbina Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Somehow connected to this subject I guess: FOPP, in Cambridge Circus (Shaftesbury Ave/Charing Cross Rd) is carrying a sizeable bunch of RVGs for 3 quid each. Mainly regular fare with a few surprises. Not a single Copy Protection in sight, I should add. I'm not connected with the shop in any way, besides the typical scavenging. F Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 I like Public Image better than the Sex Pistols. Oh, HELL yeah! And I actually like the Sex Pistols... Actually, Roadrunner was often part of their set. The Sex Pistols covered Roadrunner? Oh my god...I think I just had a chewy moment... Quote

Quincy Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 (edited) The Sex Pistols covered Roadrunner? Oh my god...I think I just had a chewy moment... It's on their Great Rock 'n' Roll Swindle album, along with some '50s covers like "Rock Around The Clock" and "C'mon Everybody." Though some covers (and other material) are minus Johnny. Yes, and at one point Lydon starts muttering, "I forgot the words...stop it, it's awful, it's bloody f*&&ing awful!" Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted March 25, 2010 Report Posted March 25, 2010 Which "Road runner" was this - Bo Diddley's or Junior Walker's? MG Quote
Hoppy T. Frog Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 Which "Road runner" was this - Bo Diddley's or Junior Walker's? MG Jonathan Richman's. Quote

Jazzmoose Posted March 26, 2010 Report Posted March 26, 2010 WHO? Them's fighin' words! Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, although spending the eighties in the Bay Area means the version that sounds "right" to me is Greg Khin's. Quote

Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, although spending the eighties in the Bay Area means the version that sounds "right" to me is Greg Khin's. So this is a third tune with the same title? Never heard of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers; nor Greg Khin. Unsurprising, I guess. They're locals, are they? MG Quote
Jazzmoose Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Local would probably be the right term for Kihn. Richman's band is probably better known now as the band Jerry Harrison was in before Talking Heads. Quote

A Lark Ascending Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Even I've heard of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers - I don't think I've ever heard their music consciously, but recall them being praised in the UK music press in the mid-late 70s at a time I was desperately thrashing around trying to find something to enjoy in the post-Year Zero rock world. Quote
sidewinder Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 Yeah, they were a real favourite of the writers for Melody Maker in particular. Quote

Tom 1960 Posted March 27, 2010 Report Posted March 27, 2010 (edited) Speaking of Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers, D. Sharpe who played drums with the band, lives just blocks away from me. I deliver his mail. Edited March 27, 2010 by Tom 1960 Quote
mjzee Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 Anyway, back to the topic at hand (not that Jonathan Richman doesn't merit his own thread). Here's the latest: EMI Reenters Talks With Universal Quote
