six string Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 I saw this Charlie Rouse album today on Uptown Records. Does anybody here have it and can you recomend it? It's also got Red Rodney, Albert Daily on it. It's probably a no brainer but I thought I would ask since I don't expect the record to disappear too quickly. Quote
Lazaro Vega Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 "Darn That Dream" is worth the price of admission alone..... Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 If anyone else hasn't carpe diemed yet, I have a NM copy (clipped corner) in my vinyl for-sale list. Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 "Darn That Dream" is worth the price of admission alone..... ..as good as 'Green Chimneys' on Soul Mates? Quote

J.A.W. Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 A very nice album. Recommended. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpe_diem Yes, I know what Horace's phrase "carpe diem" means. I have 6 long years of Latin (including reading Horace) behind me, back in the 1960s. I don't see what "carpe diem" ("enjoy the day") has got to do with recommending an album, though. Quote
BruceH Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 "Darn That Dream" is worth the price of admission alone..... ..as good as 'Green Chimneys' on Soul Mates? No. Frankly, Soul Mates is a better album all around, but Social Call is still damn good. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted April 10, 2010 Report Posted April 10, 2010 Social Call is a wonderful date. Soul Mates is too. Different vibes. Quote
coreymwamba Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 (edited) A very nice album. If you read Horace you'd know the context of the quotation - essentially he says that one should enjoy the present without worrying about the future. Thus the original poster should buy the album without worrying whether they will dislike it. It's an encouragement. Edited April 11, 2010 by coreymwamba Quote
JSngry Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Yeah, it's like, it's there, take advantage of it, don't fuck around and let it get past you. It's one of life's good things, take advantage! Shit, I've had no years, long or otherwise, of Latin behind me or in front of me, and most of my reading of Horace has been Silver lead sheets and even I know that much. Score one for the dumbasses. Yes, I know the context of the quotation, but I think it's a bit far-fetched to use it as an encouragement to get something. JSngry Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Hey, Latin is a dead language, English isn't, so consider it a salvage job. It's the least I can do for mis hermanos Latinos. Or else one can crape diem...shit on the day. Not as much fun, but something for everybody, right? Happiness in the name of the game in any language. Quote
J.A.W. Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Well, at least we agree that Social Call is a good album Quote
Brad Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Very good album; one of those unrecognized nuggets from Uptown. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Maybe Jim should have said "Carpe amicabiliter dico". Quote

JSngry Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Well, even if I could have, nobody would know what it means, or if they did, they'd have o mentally translate it. Too much math for R&B! Carpe diem it is, then, and yes, it is a very good record indeed! Quote
Peter Friedman Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 Both "Social Call" and "Soul Mates" are terrific albums. Get them both!!!! Quote
Spontooneous Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 And start looking for "Upper Manhattan Jazz Society" on Enja. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 11, 2010 Report Posted April 11, 2010 And start looking for "Upper Manhattan Jazz Society" on Enja. Stefan snatched my copy, but as I keep mentioning, Social Call is available in NM condition for $3. Quote
