RiRiIII Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Dear friends I shall highly appreciate if you could recommend me jazz recordings by artists of newer generations. I am in a Ron Carter mood lately and try to purchase his post 1995 recordings (of which 90% is either deleted or only from japan). From the ones I found I was amazed by the playing, apart from Mr Carter's, of "younger" artists such as Russell Malone, Mulgrew Miller, Stephen Scott. So, I shall be very happy to discover more recordings by them or featuring them and other names of these generations. Many thanks! Alex Quote
Joe Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 This new release by Chicago drummer Mike Reed looks interesting for its generational mix... http://www.dustedmagazine.com/reviews/5670 Quote
kh1958 Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 I saw the trio of Ron Carter, Russell Malone and Mulgrew Miller at the Blue Note last fall--I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the group. Quote
Dan Gould Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Mulgrew Miller has a pretty extensive discography as leader of a trio and its hard to discriminate among them as "best" but in terms of being in print or probably easier to acquire, the Landmark recordings are probably tough to find but you should look into his MaxJazz recordings which I assume are easier to find. There are four volumes of two different live trio recordings. For a mix of young and old, you might look into his Hand in Hand recording for Novus. Joe Henderson, Eddie Henderson and Kenny Garrett make up the front line (only Garrett is on all tracks), with Steve Nelson on vibes, Christian McBride and Lewis Nash are the rest of the rhythm section. This one is a real nice date IMHO. Quote

JSngry Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 So let me get this straight before I order - David Boykin and Ira Sullivan play on the same tunes at the same time? Is that happening here? Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Boykin is not on this disc, but you are getting the idea, yes. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Tim Haldeman is no slouch on the tenor, either. Quote
