This is the analysis I made with a friend a couple of months ago: "So, regarding Jim Hall's *Jazz Guitar*: I conducted an aural, side-by-side comparison of the original LP (via a needle-drop), the 1978 Japanese LP, the 1988 Cuscuna CD, and the 2001 Japanese CD (=same tracks as the 1988 Cuscuna CD minus the edited 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be'.) The original 1957 release and the 1978 Japanese LP contain the same tracks (i.e., without the edits and added drums that Bock introduced in 1963). However, given that the 1957 master tapes were lost or destroyed after 1963, the Japanese LP may have been sourced from a needle-drop. Two tracks from the original sessions arev included in two compilations back in 1957, rather than on the original 1957 LP itself! Cuscuna included them on the 1988 CD. Consequently, the 1988 Cuscuna CD features those two tracks, plus 9 of the 10 tracks from the original 1957 release—since one track ( "This Is Always") had been lost since 1963 (and was missing from the 1963 reissue). Of those 9 tracks, 3 are the original versions, while 6 are the edited versions *without* the extra drums; the unedited versions are lost. 'Things Ain't What They Used To Be' is a longer version than the originally released since a part of it (a full minute) had been cut from it on the original 1957 release (discogs: 'Jim Hall confirmed in a 1990 phone interview that the shorter version of "Things Ain't What They Used To Be" (track 2) is actually an edited version of the master track'.) If someone wants everything on LP, they need: 1) the original '57 release (or the Japanese pressing, so they don't have to wait forever to find a copy better than VG condition for under $300) and 2) the two '57 collections Jazz Pianists Galore – Vinyl (LP, Mono), 1957 [r3632672] | Discogs and Jazz West Coast Vol. 3 – Vinyl (LP, Compilation, Mono), 1957 [r7116445] | Discogs). As an alternative to (2), there is the 1988 Cuscuna CD ($5)."

In May 1962, a small sensation happened: The most famous jazz musician of the time, Louis Armstrong, paid a visit to the BR! For two days, the trumpeter and singer was created with his band in the BR studio in Freimann and a concert film, moderated by the then jazz voice of the Bavarian Radio, Werner Götze. Stations of the life of Satchmo, one of Armstrong's nicknames, were illustrated by images, lyrics and, of course, music. The music was recorded live in the studio by Louis Armstrong and The Allstars. That was in May 1962, trombonist Trummy Young, clarinetist Joe Darensbourg, pianist Billy Kyle, double bassist Billy Cronk and drummer Danny Barcelona. Hits like “I can’t give you anything but love”, “Basin street Blues” or “Blueberry Hill” sounded and in between Wener Götze told in an inimitable way little anecdotes from the life of Armstrong. Of course, the wrong date of birth of Louis Armstrong, the 4. July 1900. It wasn't until the 1980s that Armstrong's christening, which gave the 4th August 1901 as a birthday. The “Satchmo Story” is a worthy and very entertaining birthday present for the 125th of Louis Armstrong for his fans: A glorious journey through time, a great document and a musical stellar hour!"
