ghost of miles Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) Hey all, I'm working on a Night Lights show called "Space Age Jazz" that will feature music from the late 1950s/early 60s with either space-related titles or (to a lesser extent) jazz/exotica "space effects" sounds. Here are some of the pieces I'm considering: Duke Ellington, "Blues in Orbit," "Spacemen" "Ballet of the Flying Saucers" Buddy DeFranco, "Blues for Space Travelers" Shorty Rogers, "March of the Martians," "Chant of the Cosmos" "Martians Come Back" Gil Melle, "Four Moons," "Mars" George Russell, "Waltz From Outer Space" Hank Mobley, "Space Flight" Dave Brubeck, "Countdown" Mel Torme, "Swingin' On the Moon" And, of course, Le Sun Ra: "Lights of a Satellite," "Distant Stars," "Spacemates," "Planet Earth," "Saturn," etc. Ellington wrote an essay about space, "The Race for Space," and John Szwed has an interesting section about this topic in his Sun Ra bio (pg. 138-141). Anyway, looking for more suggestions from the wizards, experts, and assorted jazz knowers of Organissimo...thanks much in advance. Edited August 24, 2010 by ghost of miles Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 You don't know/have it, but a forthcoming nessa release contains a piece by Roscoe Mitchell (from the early '60s) called "Outerspace". Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 24, 2010 Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) Can't wait to buy and hear that Roscoe, Chuck. I'm already thinking about doing a sequel to this show at some point, too. Meanwhile, I stumbled across this--whoa! Edited August 24, 2010 by ghost of miles Quote
Free For All Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 (edited) 1958, right time frame for the show! Edited August 24, 2010 by Free For All Quote
B. Goren. Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 A lot of possibilities with Sun Ra recordings. For example: Quote

Guest Bill Barton Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 Not exactly jazz but definitely exotica. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted August 24, 2010 Report Posted August 24, 2010 You really need to include some selections from Frank Comstock's "Project Comstock: Music from Outer Space" and Russ Garcia's "Fantastica." Send me a PM. Quote
ghost of miles Posted August 24, 2010 Author Report Posted August 24, 2010 Many thanks for all of the great suggestions. On the exotica side, I also ordered Les Baxter's SPACE ESCAPADE. Quote
Stonewall15 Posted August 25, 2010 Report Posted August 25, 2010 How about Curtis Counce "Exploring The Future" LP/CD? I suggest tracks titled "Into The Orbit" or "Race For Space". LP number is Dooto DTL-247 Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted August 28, 2010 Report Posted August 28, 2010 And, on the organ side, Dave "Baby" Cortez - In orbit - Roulette 45 (also on terrible LP) The 45 is a swinger, though. MG Quote
