Tom 1960 Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 (edited) Any thoughts on this date? Sonny Buxton on KCSM played a track from the album(Kev)and highly recommended it for purchase. Edited October 16, 2010 by Tom 1960 Quote
medjuck Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 One of the first jazz records I ever owned. (Got it from the Columbia Record Club.) It's pretty great. BTW it's included in the Mosaic Box set. Quote
Free For All Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Great side. Essential JJ IMO. Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Great album. As was said above it's included in the excellent J.J. Johnson Mosaic. Quote
BFrank Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 Thanks for the heads-up. I haven't listened to the Mosaic as much as I should - this is a good excuse to pull it out. Quote
Stereojack Posted October 16, 2010 Report Posted October 16, 2010 A classic from the great JJ! You can't go wrong with this one. Quote
brownie Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 Blue Trombone was the companion album to this one... Same quartet. Same quality Quote
Free For All Posted October 17, 2010 Report Posted October 17, 2010 The tune "Blue Trombone" is a prime example of JJ's compositional style of improvising- it's a long blues in F and each chorus has a specific motive which he develops. I've transcribed it and have had several students do the same over the years. It's a great lesson in making a solo be "about" something. And the cover is totally cool as well. I have it on the Mosaic but had to buy a copy of the single when it was reissued just to have that cover. Wish I had that one on LP! Quote
