clifford_thornton Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 What a beautiful document. Check it out here. Quote
Michael Weiss Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Great Ben Webster interview (14:23) Quote
king ubu Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Thanks for letting us know... got to watch this in quiet tomorrow! Too bad I don't understand sh*t when they're speaking Dutch! Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 I still want to know how he was influenced by Ike Day. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 16, 2010 Author Report Posted November 16, 2010 My Dutch is non-existent, but even not understanding what was being said, the footage is incredible. Also, dig the fact that you get some of the sessions for ICP 01, the New Acoustic Swing Duo, on film. I have to thank Pedro Moreno (our own epistrophy_arts) for hipping me to this bit of history. Hoppy T. Frog Posted November 21, 2010 Report Posted November 21, 2010 What a beautiful document. Check it out here. Han in a tux!!!! Re: not knowing Dutch--you, Clifford, are so deep into this stuff you probably should have a passable knowledge of some of the European languages. I wonder how much information, insights, analysis, etc. I miss about my favorite artists because my German is weak, and my French and Italian is at the level of a four-year-old. There's so much "jazz" literature that doesn't get translated. Quote
martini Posted November 22, 2010 Report Posted November 22, 2010 Thanks for sharing the link to this. Wow, it made my day. What a great document. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted November 22, 2010 Author Report Posted November 22, 2010 Yes; I know just a little French & Spanish. My languages in college were Latin and classical Greek. So there you go... Quote
AndrewHill Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Just got around to watching this today. I was able to make out some things here and there, but not enough to put together all of the conversations. Still, the footage is worth watching alone! Thanks again for posting! Quote
Д.Д. Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 Well, I guess this is our sort of a thread for Han Bennink. The man (or should it be THE MAN?) turned 80 this year, and here is a nice write up on him at bandcamp: https://daily.bandcamp.com/lists/han-bennink-guide . Quote
colinmce Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 These bandcamp articles are usually dreadful. This one is excellent. Frankly just all too rare to see this music treated accurately and squarely in these pseudo-mainstream outlets these days. I pulled out some from the piece and a few others to spin today. Quote
mjazzg Posted July 18, 2022 Report Posted July 18, 2022 I wasn't overly impressed by the description of PB as a "sax scrawler" and FvH as a "piano pumeler", pretty reductive and not very respectful. That aside, a decent enough read Quote

That aside, a decent enough read I can agree with that. I'm mostly just pleased the author took time to place the music historically and not ascribe anything too extra-textual to it, which is very much in vogue now to the detriment of everyone. Quote
