bichos
here is another great find: the legendary lionel hampton band from 1953 in helsinki. can anyone see clifford brown? i love this little/great clips. a shame that there is not more!! keep boppin´ marcel
brownie
I can spot Anthony Ortega (with white shirt, next to Hampton in the first group shot), Jimmy Cleveland, Quincy Jones at far left on the main group shot. Would Clifford Brown be the man at far left on the opening still? Not really sure! Great clip, Marcel
bichos
here is a rare photo with all the musicians around the same time pictured also in europe. unfortunately not better quality. keep boppin´ marcel
Big Beat Steve
Maybe these pics taken during that particular tour would help by comparing the band members (beyond the obvious) by the way they looked then to rule out those who cannot be Brownie in the Finnish pics? That should narrow things down. They come from the October, 1953 issues of ESTRAD (most) and ORKESTER JOURNALEN (final one).
mikeweil
Not sure about Clifford, but the guy with the black beret and the hands in his coat's pockets on the far right at the end of the hand waving part - could that be Gigi Gryce? p.s. after seeing the newspaper clippings above, I'd say yes. Hamp had such great players in that band .... Edited June 30, 2011 by mikeweil

I'd say so too. At any rate, he's the third from the right in the front row (standing) in the other pic linked above in the second post by Marcel. marcello
Isn't that Clifford on the ramp in the center with the baseball cap? The to the left of Gigi looks like Q to me.
JohnT
Love the picture above of Monk Montgomery with one of the first Fender Precision Basses. Monk has been credited with the first recorded electric bass solo's while with the Hampton band!! Edited July 1, 2011 by JohnT
Christiern
That's not a baseball cap clifford is wearing, but he is standing on the stairs, his head aligned with the A and V in Scandinavian. And Yes, that Quincy with arms in the air, standing to the left of Gigi Gryce.
brownie
And there's also George Wallington and Annie Ross standing around Lionel Hampton. They left the band shortly after the start of the tour. That's Art Farmer standing at far left (with hat). Jimmy Cleveland is in foreground, kneeling beneath Wallington and Hampton. Anthony Ortega is seen above Wallington.
