GA Russell Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 This Sunday's show will be Andy Rooney's last appearance on 60 Minutes. He will continue to have an office where he will write books. http://www.mediabistro.com/tvnewser/andy-rooney-to-end-regular-60-minutes-appearances_b89348 Quote
ejp626 Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 This Sunday's show will be Andy Rooney's last appearance on 60 Minutes. I used to enjoy his commentary, but that was a looo-oong time ago (and even then he was a bit of a cranky old man chasing kids off his lawn). Probably should have hung it up 10, even 15, years ago. paul secor Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 Gonna miss those wild eyebrows. Quote
ValerieB Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 i will miss him as i miss all the others who have left us or retired from that show. Quote
BruceH Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 I hate to say it, but it's about time. His comments were always easy to make fun of, but were at least intentionally funny as well much of the time. More recently they've been cut down to about 30 seconds and half the time they don't even seem to make much sense. Quote
Pete C Posted September 27, 2011 Report Posted September 27, 2011 I never found anything to like about him. Quote
Chuck Nessa Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 the first time I remember seeing one of his reports was about XXXXyears ago. He did a segment about the Pentagon's wasteful ways. I forgive all that followed because of this. Quote
ValerieB Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 I never found anything to like about him. oh, i'm totally shocked, Pete! Not! LOL Quote
Stereojack Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 No surprise. He's only been appearing about once a month for the past year or so. Quote
Jazzmoose Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 My god...how old is he? As an oddball who doesn't have a TV I had no idea he was still alive. Quote
JSngry Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 I liked how he never let who his brother was, although, really, would you? Quote
GA Russell Posted September 28, 2011 Author Report Posted September 28, 2011 OK, so who was his brother? Quote
JSngry Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Either Mickey or Art, I forget which, and I'm not sure but that his obsession with obfuscating the truth is not the reason for that. Quote
ValerieB Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 i know his daughter is a newsperson/commentator on TV in Boston. i think her name is Anne Rooney. Quote

BERIGAN Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Either Mickey or Art, I forget which, and I'm not sure but that his obsession with obfuscating the truth is not the reason for that. so far, can't find any info on those two, but then again it could be they are 3rd cousins or something...from the absolute best source for the truth, Wiki.... His wife, Marguerite "Margie" Rooney (née Howard), died in 2004 of heart failure, after 62 years of marriage. Rooney later wrote, "her name does not appear as often as it originally did [in my essays] because it hurts too much to write it."[31] He has four children, including a daughter, Emily Rooney, who is a TV talk show host and former ABC News producer; she currently hosts a nightly Boston-area public affairs program, Greater Boston, on WGBH. Emily's identical twin, Martha, is Chief of the Public Services Division at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland. The third daughter, Ellen, is a photographer based in London. His son, Brian Rooney, has been a correspondent for ABC since the 1980s. Rooney currently lives in the Rowayton section of Norwalk, Connecticut[32] and in Rensselaerville, New York,[33] and is a longtime season ticket holder for the New York Giants.[34] [edit] Awards Quote

BruceH Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 My god...how old is he? As an oddball who doesn't have a TV I had no idea he was still alive. Turns out he'll round the corner on 93 this coming January. I'd say his 60 Minutes commentaries were basically a retirement hobby for the last 15 years or more. Quote
Quincy Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 His wife, Marguerite "Margie" Rooney (née Howard), died in 2004 of heart failure, after 62 years of marriage. Rooney later wrote, "her name does not appear as often as it originally did [in my essays] because it hurts too much to write it." That's a devastating insight. I haven't watched 60 Minutes in the past 15 years like I used to so I haven't seen much of Rooney during this time. The few times I did it was a mixed affair, but even those that fell flat I liked that he still had his spot. Even in his highly insensitive moments such as complaining about the coverage of Kurt Cobain's suicide I could see why one could have that perspective. TV tends to favor the "youth culture" and he's anything but. If you take the average of Andy & Justin it's middle age but it's still older than me. Quote

Tim McG Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 I never found anything to like about him. Why doesn't that surprise me...? My god...how old is he? As an oddball who doesn't have a TV I had no idea he was still alive. 92. And I, for one, will miss his work on 60 Minutes very much. Quote
Dave James Posted September 28, 2011 Report Posted September 28, 2011 Never had much sense of him one way or another. When I was a regular viewer of 60 Minutes, I generally enjoyed his curmudgeonly, fish out of water pieces at the end of every show. I thought he had a fairly keen sense of irony and the absurdity of everyday life and the human condition. One thing for sure, with him goes the last remaining link to the world of the Paleys the Murrows, the Cronkites and the mothership/monolith that was the Columbia Broadcasting System. Quote
Alexander Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 Don't you hate when Andy Rooney retires? I know I do. You know what else I hate? Record unemployment. That just ruins my day. Doesn't anybody remember World War II? Everybody pulled together then. They should do that now. Quote
Tim McG Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 You must be VERY young, Alexander. Quote
vajerzy Posted September 29, 2011 Report Posted September 29, 2011 I read his book "My War". Some funny stories in there- and some sobering ones as well. I developed a greater appreciation of him after reading his book. Quote
