I'd bought it because I liked he title and the cover photo. It's pretty good. (I've also read a pretty bad "Young Adult" book called "One Last Shot" which is sort of a poem. ) Gerda died in the arms of Ted Allen a man I've met but before I'd ever heard of Gerda so I never asked him about her. A friend of mine who'd made a film about Ted told me she was the love of his life. Quote

medjuck Posted August 11, 2025 Report Posted August 11, 2025 "Three Shades of Blue". I'd promised myself that I wasn't going to buy any more books about Miles Davis (or Bob Dylan) but a friend was reading this and wanted to talk about it. It's pretty good. He seems to have read everything ever published about Miles, Trane and Bill Evans and done some important new interviews. (He does point out how all the sources contradict each other.) However, at one point he writes of the AABA song form: "two choruses followed by a bridge (aka channel, release, or middle eight) followed by an out-chorus." I've never heard of the A eight bars being called a "chorus" nor of the final 8 being called the "out-chorus". I always thought a chorus was all 32 bars. Is his terminology at all common? Quote

GA Russell Posted August 25, 2025 Report Posted August 25, 2025 I suppose every baseball fan here has already read this at least once. Quote
ejp626 Posted September 2, 2025 Report Posted September 2, 2025 Halfway through Denis Johnson's Angels. Compelling but so very, very bleak. About a quarter of the way through Gabrielle Zevin's Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow, which is about two college friends who team up and become master (computer) game developers. Very good so far. ejp626 Posted September 28, 2025 Report Posted September 28, 2025 (edited) I finished Kundera's Ignorance, which I didn't really care for. I'm in the middle of a few books: Russo's Empire Falls (quite entertaining), Canetti's Auto-da-Fé (a bit pretentious but overall ok) and Buzzati's The Singularity (NYRB), which seems promising though I haven't gotten to the SF core of the novel yet.
