sgcim Posted October 8 Report Posted October 8 Just finishing Ray Brown's biography by Jay Sweet. Today, Thomas Pynchon's new novel "Shadow Ticket" was released. It takes place in 1933, thus completing TP's cycle of a novel for every decade of the 20th Century. This one involves the disappearance of a cheese heiress, with a Private Eye hot on the trail. It seems she ran off with a big band clarinetist. to Germany. Was it of her own accord? We'll soon find out... Quote
GA Russell Posted October 20 Report Posted October 20 Finally finished it. I was really looking forward to it, but I can't recommend it. For me it was too much "Then he did this, and then he did that." That said, I learned a few things about both the Lost Quintet and Circle. Quote

Ken Dryden Posted October 21 Report Posted October 21 I made the mistake of leaving this book in the living room shortly after it arrived. Now my wife is reading it and I can't get it back from her until she's through reading it. It's a fun read. Quote

As a devoted le Carre reader and Smiley fan of many years, it was a poor imitation of the books. Best to leave it with the creator. Quote
GA Russell Posted yesterday at 03:03 AM Report Posted yesterday at 03:03 AM Charles Rivers Editors, like Hourly History, publishes eBooks which are short (like a pamphlet) histories of a wide range of subjects. These are brief overviews for people who know nothing about the subject. Quote
sgcim Posted 2 hours ago Report Posted 2 hours ago The Architect of Desire: Beauty and Danger in the Sanford White Family by Suzannah Lessard. I studied Composition, Orchestration and Tonal Counterpoint with the author's father, who was a renowned US composer, and wrote some great works in the Neo-Classical style, but then switched to Serial music by the time I studied with him. He was accused of coming in to five of his six daughters' bedrooms in the middle of the night, and doing some naughty things with their bodies when he was drunk. He claimed he didn't remember doing it. He's given the pseudonym of Frank Rousseau in the book, but here was his real name https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lessard I asked him what he thought of jazz. He said "I don't; I don't think of jazz". Now I can say the same of Serial music. Quote
