bertrand Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 (edited) The Landslide LP was made up of tracks from 3 different sessions. 'Landslide' was an out-take from Dexter Calling, and the other 6 were from two incomplete sessions. Of course, all these tracks were in the Blue Note Dexter box. But, other than 'Landslide' which was added to the Dexter Calling CD issue, were any of the other tracks issued on CD in the U.S. outside of the box? My brain remembered that some of these were bonus cuts on various BN Dexter CDs, but I just checked all 8 and they do not seem to be there. If this is correct, then I will get the new Japanese reissue of Landslide. My brain at 49 does not work too well. Thanks, Bertrand. Edited August 31, 2012 by bertrand Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 (edited) I was thinking of getting this one too, but I'm still hesitating: my experiences with recent Blue Note/Toshiba masterings haven't been good (too LOUD and harsh) and I'd like to know first how this CD sounds. Has anyone heard CDs from this series? Opinions? Edited August 31, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
bertrand Posted August 31, 2012 Author Report Posted August 31, 2012 Kevin has been trying to get an answer on this question as well in the 'reissues' forum but no luck. I may go ahead and take the plunge anyway. I hope they are not needle drops. Bertrand. Quote
J.A.W. Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 (edited) I posted the same question on the Hoffman board and the Audio Speakeasy forum. Wait and see... Edited August 31, 2012 by J.A.W. Quote
mikeweil Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 I don't think these tracks had their own release. Musically, they are not that exciting, had been conceived as a reunion with Leo Parker, Dexter's room-mate from the Eckstine days, but Parker died shortly before the session. To me it always sounded a bit tinged with the sadness about Leo's passing. The main reason for me getting the box were these tracks anyway, beacuse I knew they'd never be made available outside the box. Well, until now ... The LT series LP sounded much worse than any of the later Connoisseur or other CD reissues of the material that I have compared. I replaced all of them, and I had about two thirds of the series on LP. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted August 31, 2012 Report Posted August 31, 2012 I have 2500 pts at cdjapan so I was thinking about ordering a bunch of these new LT CDs but I can't seem to find *anyone* who can tell how they stack up against other CDs of the same material. I love my Mosaic boxes but there are times when I want to hear one particular session and I don't want to figure out which CD to load and which tracks to play. In particular, I am torn on Jimmy Smith's "Cool Blues". The Ron McMaster CD was cut with the tape playing too fast (which is why it was deleted) and the RVG CD doesn't sound all that great. If this new LT CD sounds good, I'll be all over it because I think the session is very good. However, I don't want a compressed pile of audio goop. Kevin The LT series LP sounded much worse than any of the later Connoisseur or other CD reissues of the material that I have compared. I replaced all of them, and I had about two thirds of the series on LP. BTW, in the vinyl realm, I agree with Mike that these LT LPs don't sound that great. Most of them suffer from some sort of weakness that later releases have revealed. For instance, the Connoisseur CD & LP of Hank Mobley's "A Slice Of The Top" are much better than the LT LP. The LT LP suffers from a weird stereo spread and a weak audio presentation, particularly with regards to the cymbals. Kevin Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 My order of 7 of the new LT CDs from Japan came in and it included Dexter Gordon's "Landslide". As I type this, I'm spinning it. It sounds very nice. It isn't as "in your face" as many of today's CD reissues, which helps a lot with the cymbals. In fact, it sounds just a bit muted almost like one Ron McMaster's old CDs. There's seems to be very little EQ at all. Flat transfer of the master tape maybe? Kevin Quote
J.A.W. Posted October 12, 2012 Report Posted October 12, 2012 As I said on the thread about this series I got Lou Donaldson's Midnight Sun and it sounds fine. No problems with loudness and harshness. Quote
