Does the Sun logo mean that the release is legit?

Here is a box that looks interesting. It's everything that Charlie Rich recorded for Sun.

You will note that the cover includes the Sun logo as well as the Charly logo. Should I take that to mean that this is an officially licensed product?

Charly is known for both legit and illegit reissues. No idea if this one is legit.

I don't know if this makes any difference, but it appears that the box set is distributed by a U.S. company (101 Distribution), not an Andorran outfit.

Chuck is right. Many EU public-domain releases are distributed by U.S. companies (and carried by stores like Amazon) although the releases are not legit in the United States.

Charlie Rich actually recorded for Phillips International, a Sun subsidiary. I don't know if he ever had a record released on the Sun label.

Well I could be wrong but I believe they do have the rights to Sun, also to Vee Jay.

I don't have definitive information on this but they have been issuing Sun material for many years, you would think someone would have noticed by now. Also some of the Sun and Vee Jay material they are issuing is NOT public domain. e.g. a recent release of Jerry Butler singles of Vee Jay material.

I don't have the Rich set but I have a similar Johnny Cash set. The label states that the recordings are licensed from Sun Entertainment Corporation.

What they don't have, and got into a lot of trouble for, was Chess.

I found out that he did record an instrumental for Sun under the pseudonym of Bobby Sheridan in 1960 (Bobbys were big by 1960) - "Sad News"/"Red Man" - Sun 354

Obit makes it seem like company is still owned by Singleton's family unless something's happened since 2009. Must be one of the last older independent companies.
