Late Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 (l to r): Dale Hillary, Ornette Coleman, Spanky DeBrest, Don Cherry, Mel Lewis (playing Art Blakey's set). Quote
Homefromtheforest Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I believe that picture was taken in Vancouver in the late 50s. Quote
paul secor Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 I wonder what the conversation (assuming there was some) was like on that bandstand. Quote
B. Clugston Posted December 2, 2014 Report Posted December 2, 2014 There's more photos of Ornette (and others) in Vancouver on this page and some suggestion that that photo was taken in New York: http://theoriginalcellarjazzclub.blogspot.ca/ Quote

Yes, Cherry came up to Vancouver several times in the 1950s. Local jazz fans knew him before Ornette. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 Yeah, I have read that Cherry was actually living in Vancouver for a minute. Is that right? Quote
Gheorghe Posted December 3, 2014 Report Posted December 3, 2014 Might be intereresting how it sounded. Maybe in the style of the legendary "Hillcrest" recordings. Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry in a more straight ahead manner. Parker“s "Klactoveesdsteene" (or how you spell it) done by Ornette and Don Cherry was something.... Quote
