Late
(l to r): Dale Hillary, Ornette Coleman, Spanky DeBrest, Don Cherry, Mel Lewis (playing Art Blakey's set).
Homefromtheforest
I believe that picture was taken in Vancouver in the late 50s.
paul secor
I wonder what the conversation (assuming there was some) was like on that bandstand.

B. Clugston
There's more photos of Ornette (and others) in Vancouver on this page and some suggestion that that photo was taken in New York: http://theoriginalcellarjazzclub.blogspot.ca/

Yes, Cherry came up to Vancouver several times in the 1950s. Local jazz fans knew him before Ornette.
JSngry
Did not know that, and find it interesting, especially with James Clay in the picture. Thanks for that. Another piece of the puzzle!
clifford_thornton
Yeah, I have read that Cherry was actually living in Vancouver for a minute. Is that right?
Gheorghe
Might be intereresting how it sounded. Maybe in the style of the legendary "Hillcrest" recordings. Ornette Coleman and Don Cherry in a more straight ahead manner. ParkerĀ“s "Klactoveesdsteene" (or how you spell it) done by Ornette and Don Cherry was something....
