Hardbopjazz Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 Sad day in jazz. One of the biggest losses along with Clifford Brown. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 I attended these three festivals. I was going to meet up with Aparax for the 2009 show but was called by the office and couldn't make it. Quote
Steve Reynolds Posted March 13, 2015 Report Posted March 13, 2015 I was at two of the earlier festivals - maybe 1997 or 1998??? Saw Max Roach solo, Randy Weston's African Rhythms, Jimmy Heath Big Band, Milt Jackson Quartet and Benny Carter (with Al Grey) Those were the highlights. The highlight was and remains in my head and heart was seeing and hearing Benny Carter - I think he was 89 or 90 Quote

BillF Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 ' My first 'Charlie Parker' - a 7'' LP The logo and typography are the same as the French Guilde du Jazz of that era. I first heard the Parker Dials on that label (dreadful sound quality, later greatly improved on the British Spotlite label.) Quote

Peter Friedman Posted March 14, 2015 Report Posted March 14, 2015 Back in the 50's I had a Bird LP on Dial with a great album cover. Sold it long ago. Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Back in the 50's I had a Bird LP on Dial with a great album cover. Sold it long ago. I really like the cover on those three ten inches. IIRC the Dial 12" came housed in a generic sleeve or at least none has surfaced with a cover. Quote
BillF Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 In contrast, here's a very dark cover that I remember and like. The mysterious Bird! This one used to be a real cheapo in the UK. Quote
Hardbopjazz Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 It's a Herculean task for anyone trying to acquire every known recording of Bird. I tried to do this in the early 1990s. There are so many live recording on so many different labels, some sonically so poor that I ended up getting doubles and didn't realize at first. I gave up. Quote
mjzee Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 I was going to say that we should start a thread about Charlie Parker's suits, and that, of the two above, I preferred the pinstripe. Then a simple web search uncovered this: http://www.jazzwax.com/2010/08/charlie-parker-and-mckusicks-suit.html I don't know if it's the same suit, but it could be. Quote
paul secor Posted March 30, 2015 Report Posted March 30, 2015 Three Charlie Parker LPs issued by Dial and reissued as reproductions in a three box set by Spotlite in the early 1980s: I can't vouch for it, but Spotlite (and other sources on the web) say that Bird Plays the Blues was the first jazz LP.
