Hardbopjazz Posted February 27, 2004 Report Posted February 27, 2004 You go to my head Beautiful tune, but it's hard to listen to anyone play it after Clifford Brown's version. You can't say that about Lee Morgan's version on "The Gigolo". I think it is the best version of that tune erver recorded, at least in my opinion. Not sure how that follows from the Clifford Brown comment, plus "The Gigolo" is not a standard, and has not been recorded by many artists, afaik. Are you thinking of "Just a gigolo"? Jim, I am referring to "You go to my head" from "The Gigolo". Quote

I'm not familiar with "I Wonder", "It's The Mood That I'm In" and "It All Depends On You"- are those a bit obscure or have I been deprived of some good tunes that I should know? Are there any definitive recordings of them? Please enlighten me. Some other good ones: I Thought About You, If I Should Lose You and Embraceable You (the "You" medley). The latter has been done a lot, but it's still a beautifully written tune. Actually, I like the vast majority of the classic standards. The list of tunes I don't like is much shorter. Quote
street singer Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Old Folks is one of my favorites as well. I don't think I've ever heard a bad version of it. I really dig the version of this on Grant Green's 'Grantstand'. Quote

street singer Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 loverman 'Loverman'. Aw, yeah...LOVE this one!!! Billie did the definitive version of this one for me...and ofcourse a fellow named Charlie Parker did a passable version of it as well. But, man...that version on J.J. Johnson's 'The Eminent: Vol. 1' just floors me! Quote

I thought that would get it stirred up. Seriously, though. 'It Never Entered My Mind' from Miles' 'Vol. 1' on Blue Note... Listen to that and tell me you're not moved! Quote
Free For All Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 I really like the version on Workin', even though he's struggling a bit to play in tune with the harmon mute in. The emotional content is sublime, though! Quote
street singer Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 I really like the version on Workin', even though he's struggling a bit to play in tune with the harmon mute in. The emotional content is sublime, though! I was just listening to that version yesterday and thinking how nice it is. I believe my preference for the one on 'Vol. 1' is mostly for sentimental reasons... There used to be a jazz radio program on Saturday evenings here in Houston called 'Milestones'. I'd listen every week from 6-9 PM. Being new to jazz at the time, this program was something of a revelation for me. It was all new to me and I was completely fascinated by everything I was hearing. All good things must come to an end, however...and the program is no more. (And, ofcourse, there has been nothing to come along and take its place since its demise...) The last song that was played before the program went off the air was that version of 'It Never Entered My Mind' from 'Vol. 1'. I guess it's just sort of stuck with me since then... Aw, shucks... [sniff, sniff] Quote

LAL Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 A few more, if some of these can be considered standards... - Accentuate the Positive - These Foolish Things (Rod Stewart version, not) - Syklark - Ain't Misbehavin - Black and Blue - Rockin Chair - Autumn in New York - September Song - If I Should Lose You - They Can't Take That Away - Let's Call the Whole Thing Off - Fascinating Rhythm ...and so forth. Late Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 'You're My Thrill' has not been mentioned yet. Love that song. The only version that (I think) I have of this is Chet Baker's from the soundtrack to Let's Get Lost, and I like it a lot. What other versions do you recommend Brownie? A standard I never tire of is "The Song is You" — one to add to Connie's "you" medley! Quote
brownie Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Late, two vocal versions that automatically come to mind are Billie Holiday's (the Decca one) and Helen Merrill's from the 'Feeling is Mutual' album. Billie Holiday's version gives me goose pimples. The arrangement is a bit corny but Billie gives all she had. Her Decca sides seem to be overlooked. But her voice was never better than around that time. Quote

The only Powell on Verve that I have are 'Jazz Giant' and 'Best Of Bud Powell On Verve', which contains this version of "It Never Entered My Mind". I'll have to give this one a listen... Two instrumental versions of 'You're My Thrill' I love are the Zoot Sims one on the Pablo 'For Lady Day' album (with Jimmy Rowles) and the Hal McKusick arrangement of the song in the Decca album 'Cross Section Saxes' (with Art Farmer and Bill Evans). A major forgotten album which I'm afraid is not available nowadays... Quote
EKE BBB Posted February 28, 2004 Report Posted February 28, 2004 Actually there are a lot of good standards I never get tired of... These are some of my "most repeated standards": Body and soul What is this thing called love Yesterdays The man I love Lover man I cover the waterfront Willow weep for me Take the A train Tea for two All the things you are St. Louis blues I´ll remember april Just one of those things Honeysuckle rose Night and day You go to my head Embraceable you After you´ve gone Mood indigo I can´t get started with you ´round midnight I got rhythm On the sunny side of the street How high is the moon Caravan I got it bad (and that ain´t good) Perdido Stardust Night in Tunisia Some might be considered "jazz standards" as oposed to Tin Pan Alley songs. Note there "a few" Ellingtonia up there! Quote
