WD45 Posted March 4, 2005 Report Posted March 4, 2005 They'll have a note under the star rating that says: 128K MP3 ONLY! Otherwise, there is no listing of the bitrate. The bit rates are variable [VBR] unless otherwise noted with the 128 disclaimer. "With variable bit rate MP3s, the encoder automatically detects which bit rate is most apropriate for the sound being encoded, live. This means that when there is little sound to be heard, the encoder encodes the MP3 with a low bit rate (as low as 16 kbps or less), but when there is very complex sound to be heard, the encoder uses a much higher bit rate (up to 320 kbps) to attain better sound reproduction." source Quote
John B Posted March 9, 2005 Author Report Posted March 9, 2005 (edited) emusic just added this album: which I just bought a copy of. It is really, really good. Very highly recommended for fans of African music or just anyone with an open ear. "KONONO N°1 was founded over 25 years ago by Mingiedi, a virtuoso of the likembé (a traditional instrument sometimes called "sanza" or "thumb piano", consisting of metal rods attached to a resonator). The band's line-up includes three electric likembés (bass, medium and treble), equipped with hand-made microphones built from magnets salvaged from old car parts, and plugged into amplifiers. There's also a rhythm section which uses traditional as well as makeshift percussion (pans, pots and car parts), three singers, three dancers and a sound system featuring these famous megaphones." The label website is here and has sound clips. Edited March 9, 2005 by John B Quote
indigo Posted March 10, 2005 Report Posted March 10, 2005 the new booster plans deals suck would you or someone else please fill me in on the booster plans? i haven't yet signed up. i eventually managed to get beyond that you-must-register-to-enter-the-site page and could explore the offerings -- a lot of attractive stuff. but i couldn't find anything in the help files about the terms of the booster plans. Quote
indigo Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 I'm not sure why they suck, but here they are: Booster Pack 10 - 10 Song Downloads $4.99 Booster Pack 25 - 25 Song Downloads $9.99 Booster Pack 50 - 50 Song Downloads $14.99 Basically, if you use up your monthly "allowance", and you still want to download more music, you can purchase a Booster Pack. Thanks for the info. If I remember correctly, the basic pricing comes out to about $0.25/track. So 'booster' downloads would be more expensive. Too bad, although it makes sense from the company's perspective. Quote
Soulstation1 Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 yeah the $$$ per d/l is too high with the booster packs i'll just get by with the trane european set for now ss1 Quote
md655321 Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 Recently added, or at least I just noticed, Pi Recrodings, including some fantastic stuff by Henry Threadgill and Vijay Iyer. Also some Leo Smith and Art Ensemble which I am not familiar with. I might get "The Meeting" by AEC, any thoughts on that? Quote

Dave James Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 I went a little overboard the other day on e-music, at least I tried to. Apparently, there's a limit to how many tunes you can download from them in a given month. When I tried to do an upgrade to my account and add another 50 songs, I got a message saying I'd reached my limit. The message also said they were working on some other packages that would eventually allow junkies such as myself greater access to their "catalogue", but there was no specific information provided as to what and when. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised when this message popped up. I wonder why they care how many songs someone wants to download in a month as long as they're paying the freight. Seems odd to me that any business would turn down a paying customer. Up over and out. Quote
randyhersom Posted March 11, 2005 Report Posted March 11, 2005 MAXJAZZ just landed, with Jeremy Pelt and Mary Stallings likely to hit my basket when I refresh on Monday. Hadn't noticed the Pi, will go check that out. Quote

Indestructible! Posted March 12, 2005 Report Posted March 12, 2005 yeah the $$$ per d/l is too high with the booster packs i'll just get by with the trane european set for now ss1 Jeff, Man, what are ya talkin' about? If you do the math, there's no way the booster packs make the $$$ per d/l too high. For example, I'm assuming you're on the 90 downloads for $19.99 a month plan... that works out to a wee bit over 22 cents per song. If you add the 50 downloads for $14.99 booster pack... that works out to just a wee bit under 30 cents per song. So the booster pack deal only adds about 7.5 cents per song more to the typical download cost. When you compare that to the ridiculous 99 cents per song that iTunes charges, I'd say eMusic is a GREAT deal. Plus, as has been mentioned here before, just download those Braxton albums! Many of them are only 1-2 songs long! Cheers, Shane Quote
Soulstation1 Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 what do you do after you have burned a cd from e-music? put 'em in a binder a cd jewel case? do you write/type up the info for the cd case? make cd covers off the internet? store these with your regular cds? ss1 Quote
Son-of-a-Weizen Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 what do you do after you have burned a cd from e-music? Fire up a Camel and gaze at the ceiling. Quote
Dave James Posted March 21, 2005 Report Posted March 21, 2005 (edited) SS, I just keep the music on my i-Pod. My intention at this point would be to eventually fill up the Pod with nothing but Fantasy albums that I don't have in my collection. That way storage, which has always been a problem, becomes a non-issue. I guess at times it might be nice to have the kind of information you get on a tray card, but I can always look up the players on e-music or in my Fantasy Jazz catalogue. As to cover art, not anything I have an overwhelming need to have. I'm more interested in the music than the accouterments. Up over and out. Edited March 21, 2005 by Dave James Quote
Parkertown Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 Yeah, but it seems to me that they sound kinda "wonky" as MP3s when listened to on my main listening system with the dvd player. (Data discs containing 7-10 cds worth) They sound better after being converted to waves and burned as a regular cd. IMHO. Quote
Daniel A Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 They sound better after being converted to waves and burned as a regular cd. IMHO. This sounds odd, if you mean you're playing the audio CDs on your DVD player too. If they sound better after having been converted to WAV format it appears that your DVD player does not handle MP3s well. There might have been a thread here (probably more than a year ago) which brought up this problem. Quote
Parkertown Posted March 22, 2005 Report Posted March 22, 2005 I'm not really concerned with it. To me they kinda sounded like they were in a tunnel... I don't need to listen to MP3 cds...not when I wanna hear something really nice sounding... Quote
Soulstation1 Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 what time in the day (am/pm) does e-music refresh your account? today is my refresh day and i really want shirley scott's "soul sister" ss1 Quote
WD45 Posted March 27, 2005 Report Posted March 27, 2005 I axed my e-muisc membership a while ago--they recently sent me an email for a free month's worth of downlaods [50]. Sweet! I will say, for those looking to make the most of the minutes-per-download ratio, there is a bunch of ragas by Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan, as well as several discs worth of Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. So if you are into ragas or Qawaali, they have your number! This may have been mentioned before, but they also have some Blood and Fire reggae reissue stuff up now, too. Quote
