I have not heard a lot of his work, but I've liked what I have heard (often in a sideman role).

RIP It's a tragedy he had to suffer for many years. The healthcare situation in this country really stinks.

I don't have much of his music (the GRP brand of jazz was never a favorite of mine), but I know I have the Two Amigos CD he recorded with Herbie Mann.  Mr. Valentin is also due respect and thanks for having been a middle school music teacher in the South Bronx for three years.  May he Rest in Peace.

I have to admit I didn't like the GRP album with Herbie Mann and sold it, but really liked his playing on several other recordings, most notably Don Grolnick's Medianoche and the CDs of Bill O'Connell. He was an excellent player, no wonder if he studied with Hubert Laws. R.I.P.

He always had great bands with Bill O'Connell, Robby Ameen and Richie Flores. I liked his stuff with Manny Orquendo's Libre.  I agree with StarThrower, in that his last years he served as poster child for our country's healthcare system with his family and friends going to social media to try and scrounge up money.

I like what I've heard of him as a sideman and I have one of his leader dates on order.  I'm sorry to hear of the health issues he experienced for the past several years.  Thank you for the music, Mr. Valentin, and rest in peace.
