The Berlin audience had a reputation of being rather unpredictably picky - the boos are not on the record but were heard on the TV broadcast I saw. She was on the same bill as several more modern to avant garde acts, and the jazz fans who had come for those didn't appreciate her, although critics acknowledged O'Day was at the top of her art that evening. The festival directors wanted to present her as a classic vocal jazz artist but didn't their idea across, it seemed. Quote
