Morton & Cook don't "get" Griff & Lock. They dismiss most of their records out of hand. Everyone has their blind spots. 😉 Earlier: Quote
sidewinder Posted January 24, 2020 Report Posted January 24, 2020 Picked up this one on Gearbox - very nice. Opted for the 2CD ‘Executive’ version with the long bonus track. Quote
duaneiac Posted January 24, 2020 Report Posted January 24, 2020 Recorded at a May 1, 1970 concert in Bern. Mr. Webster appears on 5 of the 11 tracks while Mr. Wilson is on all of them. If one can get past the very prominent thudding of Isla Eckinger's bass, the two masters offer up a "Stardust" to savor. The main flaw of this disc is it's over so quickly, but each track is a delight. Quote
JSngry Posted January 25, 2020 Author Report Posted January 25, 2020 Not such a great record, but Duke Pearson & Joe Henderson make it at least a discographical curiosity. Quote
duaneiac Posted January 25, 2020 Report Posted January 25, 2020 A cool track, but according to a poster on YouTube: " This is a lovely track, but Kippie Moeketsi, Victor Ntoni and Danayi Ndlovu (check spelling) are *not* on this recording!! The personnel is Tete Mbambisa (piano, composer and arranger), Barney Rachabane (alto), Duku Makasi (tenor) Basil Coetzee (tenor), Sipho Gumede (bass) and Gilbert Matthews (drums). The photograph is by Ian Bruce Huntley. " Quote

Well, this one on EMANEM has the the lonious himself on a couple of tracks. But it's the first part of the CD - the Lacy / Rudd quartet - that is the real deal here. Quote
HutchFan Posted January 25, 2020 Report Posted January 25, 2020 (edited) Wayne Shorter - The Odyssey of Iska (Blue Note, 1971) This incredibly creative album is the subject of today's post on my blog, PLAYING FAVORITES. 3 hours ago, JSngry said: I know Alfredo "Chocolate" Armenteros -- but I'm not familiar with Antonio "Chocolate" Diaz Mena. Regardless, this latter "Chocolate" has one helluva line-up on that record (including the other "Chocolate"!). Good stuff? Edited January 25, 2020 by HutchFan Quote
HutchFan Posted January 25, 2020 Report Posted January 25, 2020 Now listening to some live Ellington from 1959. Tonight, I got a real charge out of Shorty Baker's loose-as-a-goose solo on "Mood Indigo." Quote
