You never can go wrong with Helen Merrill ....

She has a lovely voice, skills and soul too.  But this sounds like it was someone else's idea - she sounds like she's sight-reading.  And I love tribute albums when the're done well, but this is no better than mildly pleasant to me.

Different strokes for different folks, I believe ....

I like this idea of listening to records under a certain "Motto", like last week it was early Ornette Coleman stuff, now it´s all of Coltrane´s Prestige records. I did the same, listening this year to all of Tranes Prestige Albums, but somehow I must admit the Albums I listen too mostly is the one with the Long track of "Good Bait" (Soultrane I think), and "Stardust"....., they were my first Coltrane Albums and I think I listened more to them than to other Prestige Albums....

Coleman Hawkins - Rainbow Mist (Delmark)
Some of "the first bebop recordings" -- with Diz, Max, Pettiford, and others.  I gotta say: This sounds as much like swing as bop to me. ... But whatever you call it, the music is wonderful. :)

Simon, I dig Art Hodes, but I've never heard that LP.  Good stuff?

I found this disc for a bargain price last week.  A successful compilation in that it a) held my interest (for the most part) throughout), b) introduced me to some new musical artists (The Indonesian All-Stars, Charly Antolini, Hideo Shiraki Quintet)  c) presented some new-to-me performances by some familiar favorites (Hampton Hawes, Dave Pike, Baden Powell).  I am guessing these 1960's & '70's tracks originate from MPS recordings.

On Moving Out there is a very fine version of "More than you Know" with Thelonious Monk.

On "Plays for Bird" it´s interesting they don´t do Bird´s compositions (with the exception of the more standard like sounding "My Little Suede Shoes" , it´s mostly standard material from Verve recordings Bird did.....

And Kids Know is a very nice waltz.
