Justin V Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 More of the birthday Benny, with a crack band of Dr. Eddie Henderson, Steve Davis, Mike LeDonne, Buster Williams, Carl Allen and a guest spot from Al Jarreau. Quote
EKE BBB Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Listening to Fats Waller home recordings with Eubie Blake, JPJ, The Lion... originally issued as Ristic 22 & 23 with restoration by the great John R. T. Davies, and recently reissued for the first time on CD by Sounds of Yesteryear. This is music of the utmost importance, from an historical perspective, and soooo beautiful.... but the work done by the latter label is barely professional from a technical point of view, and the presentation so 'ugly', that I would gladly ask for a refund and stick to the cd-burn I received from a fellow stride piano collector many moons ago. JSngry Posted January 26, 2021 Author Report Posted January 26, 2021 I want to see the Davis operas performed, not just presented. It's "different" for me, to say the least, but I could see really enjoy getting immersed in it live. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Sal Salvador - Juicy Lucy - with Billy Taylor, Richard Davis , Joe Morello Quote
jazzbo Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Listening to the '97 SBM Sony LP facsimile cd of this Miles Davis release. I like the sound better on this than on the disc in the Complete Columbia Album set. . . but of course I can't just sell or give away that disc, it's part of an 80 disc set. The dilemnas of a collector. . . I know them well. Miles Davis "You're Under Arrest" Quote

jazzbo Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Piri "Voces Querem Mate" This Brazilian trio of singers and instrumentalists is a sunny blast of upbeat beauty for a gray cold day. Reminding me a lot of the Tamba 3 and Tamba 4, with a bit more lushness of arrangements and of course more voices. Quote

Phil Woods plays clarinet on one track ("Adios Nonino"). It's very pretty. I don't think I have Woods playing clarinet anywhere else. gregmo This is a beautiful CD. I bought it when it first came out as a fundraiser for that Classical Action: Performing Arts Against AIDS group. Mark Murphy's performance of the title track is one of the greatest performances he ever recorded -- very moving. For me, the surprise standout track was "Little Prayer" by Dave Catney, who passed away from AIDS complications not long after this CD was made. It's a beautiful song of loss and remembrance which, unfortunately, is now all too relevant once again. There was a subsequent CD issued by the same organization Quote
jazzbo Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Fernanda Cunha "Olhos de Mar" Another nice cd from Ms Cunha. Very nice guitar on this. Quote
HutchFan Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Andrew Hill - Blue Black (Eastwind/Test of Time) with Jimmy Vass (as, ss, fl), Chris White (b), and Leroy Williams (d) and Andrew Hill - Live at Montreux (Arista/Freedom) solo piano Two outstanding Andrew Hill releases, both recorded in '75. Gheorghe Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Here are three double albums from the late 70s, when there was again more interest in acoustic jazz . Those three albums were very much discussed in my jazz friend circles during the last year of high school. They came out around the same time 1978 and the most beautiful thing was that the musicians could be heard live on all bigger jazz festivals. Though I couldn´t see the Milestone Jazzstars in this formation (they were together only for US tour if i remember right), there was enough "Milestone Jazzstars" at the Velden Jazzfestival summer 1979, when Joe Henderson , Sonny Rollins and Ron Carter were scheduled, each one with his own group. jazzbo Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 Rita Reys "Rita A Go Go" Philips I ordered one of these "Five Original Albums" or Reys because it had her Jobim album which I wanted to hear, and there were four others. This one is interesting. I am used to hearing English spoken with this Dutch accent I guess from my years in Swaziland; my wife says she sings "weird" but it doesn't seem weird to me. Very vivid sound in this live recording! The songs are very much "of a time and place." Quote
