I've never heard that record -- but that's a killer line-up of saxophonists.

It's also got a typically pointed Baraka poem, "Heathens and Space", delivered as only he can deliver it.

Ella sound terrific.

But it is very disappointing that there are no solos by any of the musicians. With a rhythm section that includes Paul Smith and Jim Hall a few solos in the middle of tunes would be highly appropriate.

It seems there are jazz vocal albums that have solos by the musicians and others that do not. In my opinion, a jazz recording is always much better when the listener gets to hear some playing by the musicians on the session.

– Cecil Bridgewater, Charles McGee (tr, flhn)
– Dick Griffin (tb)
– Earl Dunbar (g)
– Harold Mabern, Jan Hammer (p, el p)
– Gene Perla, Stanley Clarke (b)
– Omar Clay, Richard Pratt (d)
– Elvin Jones (d, perc)
– Airto Moreira (perc)

I think it was Ella's date only! BTW there  exists another  album (same location) issued recently.

Back in high school I purchased this on lp, in a Walgreens for something like 65 cents. Now I have the cd.

Just put this on top of the pile for breakfast listening tomorrow. Any Teddy Charles session is worth hearing.

- That's what this thread is good for - reminding one of discs that have been gathering dust for too long.
