DMP Posted September 24, 2021 Report Posted September 24, 2021 Jonah Jones, “I Dig Chicks.” ( But not for long, that shuffle/jump routine is usually only good for a few minutes.) (But Jones is a wonder player!) Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted September 24, 2021 Report Posted September 24, 2021 Billy Harper - Soul of an Angel (Metropolitan Records) Another Metropolitan release that I've been spinning for many years. If you are on Tommy's E-mail list, you might want to pick this up. Excellent music. Quote
Peter Friedman Posted September 24, 2021 Report Posted September 24, 2021 Ella sound terrific. But it is very disappointing that there are no solos by any of the musicians. With a rhythm section that includes Paul Smith and Jim Hall a few solos in the middle of tunes would be highly appropriate. It seems there are jazz vocal albums that have solos by the musicians and others that do not. In my opinion, a jazz recording is always much better when the listener gets to hear some playing by the musicians on the session. Quote

BTW there exists another album (same location) issued recently. Quote

Now I have the cd. Just put this on top of the pile for breakfast listening tomorrow. Any Teddy Charles session is worth hearing. - That's what this thread is good for - reminding one of discs that have been gathering dust for too long. Quote
Teasing the Korean Posted September 24, 2021 Report Posted September 24, 2021 Now enjoying that most hated of albums, the Monk Columbia album with Oliver Nelson. If you get rid of the two Teo Macero originals and reinstate "Blue Monk," this is a very good album, like Monk sitting in with the Tonight Show band. Quote
