Given that the arrangements allow the horns to intrude in on Parker with their own solos are various points, I had expected to see a list of very familiar names. It is an interesting session. Much rawer than Verve with orchestration would lead one to expect. Quote

jazzbo Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 "Classic Black&White Jazz Sessions" 11 cd box set by Mosaic Records. This fascinating handsome set has a wonderful booklet and I've been waiting for its release and to have it in my hands for what seems a long while. Listening to disc 1, which starts off with solo recordings by one of my favorite pianists, Art Hodes. https://www.mosaicrecords.com/product/classic-black-white-sessions/ Quote
Rabshakeh Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 (edited) Grover Washington, Jr. – Soul Box Vol.1 (Kudu, 1973) A real statement, despite being wildly uneven. I really think that kids getting into jazz get a whole lot out of this era of Washington's music. I'm still upset to see the sneers that his music receives from some areas of the jazz establishment. jazzbo Posted July 19, 2022 Report Posted July 19, 2022 I love this set; the edits don't bother me. Sound is great! Now listening to disc 5. Quote
JSngry Posted July 19, 2022 Author Report Posted July 19, 2022 I used to disregard Andy Shppard, but no, having listened to a sort of Carl Bley immersion, it seems that he has become a Charlie rouse to a Carla Bley Monk. This is totally splendid quartet record, Few groups achieve this level of integration. Quote
