It's a big band based in Tel Aviv playing Mulatu Astatke's ethio-jazz, with Mulatu on vibes, piano and percussion. It's a fantastic record (IMO), Available through Bandcamp. Recorded in 2023. HutchFan Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 NP: Jimmy Owens - The Monk Project (IPO, 2011) Howard Johnson's tuba (or bari sax) sounds wonderful filling out the bottom end. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 Stan Getz - Focus (Verve). My favorite "with strings" Jazz recording. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 I like this session quite a lot. Smulyan is in top form, pianist Pete Malinverni fits well and plays fine solos. Drummer Matt Wilsom is truly wonderful. His playing is highly creative and joyful. The vocals by Anais Reno were just ok, and I would have been happy had she not been included on this album (your opinion may differ). Quote

A show tune. Thanks! 1 hour ago, Teasing the Korean said: Love this album, but I never thought of it as a "with strings" album stylistically. Granted, it has strings. Cool Velvet would fit that bill, with variable results. Quote

Peter Friedman Posted January 6 Report Posted January 6 I am finding many CDs on the Concord label that I find that I like very much. This is one of them. Quote

The arrangements are all on the syrupy side to one extent or the other, so there's that. But Getz never sounds disengaged, and always seems fully engaged in playing inside the chart rather than over it. I like that approach a lot. Quote
JSngry Posted January 7 Author Report Posted January 7 Contains the (to this point) last readily available recordings of Rollins pre-Bidge sabbatical. Very revealing, in that regardless of how much he may or may not have been thrown of by Coltrane ,(and Ornette) it shows that ultimately he took the time off because, in his words, he wasn't yet "good enough". It's humbling to think about that, and at the time it must have seemed like a perverse notion, but comparing his playing before and after, it's clear to me what he was talking about. Still, there is some "in the zone" playing here. Not all but some. Some! Quote
