I remember reading something that Nick Tosches wrote, to the effect that calling Roy Acuff the king of country music is equivalent to calling Sonny Tufts the king of Hollywood. I'm not a Nick Tosches fan, but he nailed that one.

Well, yes. But "king" in the real-world sense is about owning everybody and everything, and, uh, Acuff-Rose, etc.

A timeless performance from exactly 50 years ago today, December 17, 1968 --

Here she was just 6 months before her final curtain, still learning new material and still delivering a remarkable performance despite a bit of hoarseness (which actually works in the context of the song).  She could say more with just a look and a little head nod than most of today's singers can with all the overheated melisma at their disposal.
