7/4
Here's the cover of the original LP: Why does it look totally different than my copy?
sidewinder
Isn't that the early 70s Impulse version ? I have a 'Sun Ship' from similar vintage with the Coltrane face logo on the bottom right.
Gary
7/4's cover is the same as the JapanseCD I recently bought.
7/4
7/4's cover is the same as the JapanseCD I recently bought. That's just a scan from the net, but it looks just like the LP I bought many years ago.
mikeweil
That was the cover of the first issue on CRC - Coltrane Recording Corporation. There was a thread on Cosmic Music of the Coltrane Impulse! releases discussing this earlier release. The Impulse! was a later reissue. ghost of miles
What's happening with the Half Note Impulse release? I can't find it on the CD Universe website--wasn't it slated for release next week? Any idea how many CDs it will be? The tree that's been circulating contains four. So has this been postponed? I don't see anything on it at borders.com or cduniverse Greg, According to someone on the Coltrane list, it's being held up due to legal battles over ownership of the tapes. Anybody know the scope of Verve's intended release? The vine that's been going around consists of 4 CDs: Disc 1 (19 March 1965): 1. Chim chim cheree (19:42) 2. Impressions (20:46) Disc 2 (26 march 1965): 1. Afro blue (12:21) 2. One down, one up (28:07) Disc 3 (2 April 1965): 1. Creation (23:20) 2. I want to talk about you (15:37) 3. Afro blue (5:42) Disc 4 (7 May 1965): 1. Song of praise (19:49) 2. My favorite things (23:51) Seems like Verve could squeeze that onto 3 CDs, although it would mean breaking up the dates. Thanks for the update. Who owns the tapes, exactly? What is the problem? Looks like a good set though
ghost of miles
Well, I'm not sure--but the vine material was evidently booted from broadcasts taped by Boris Rose. Who has oversight of the Rose-taped material now? I'm assuming the Coltrane estate rightfully wants control... a conflict between them & the Rose owners? I honestly don't know, as there were no specific references in the Coltrane list post, but I hope it gets settled & that we can eventually hear this music. Jazzdude
I have a review copy of the new Alice Coltrane. All the tracks are outstanding except for maybe one, which is the shortest track, less than 3 minutes. It has a cheesy sounding '70's sounding synthisizer on it. Great playing by Ravi and especially Jack Dejohnette throughout. One cut, track 6 or 7, (I haven't got it in front of me) sends shivers down my spine everytime I hear it. Ravi blows allot in a modal manner without sounding like his father on it. This disc will be a biggie, I predict.
