Rabshakeh Posted July 26 Posted July 26 Slowerpace – Barbershop Simulator I periodically find myself interested in genres of electronic music that fall into the "nu jazz" space: appropriating jazz elements for down tempo electronic music. I have been listening to a lot of Vaporwave and it's microgenre Barber Beats recently. Pretty much made up of poor quality trip hop with some sort of irony laden pretension to avantgarde something. Often there is social commentary around concepts of nostalgia and consumerism, although it is typically pretty wide (witness this "tribute" to vintage Sega Genesis business simulator games, a genre that did not exist on a system that didn't have music like this). But fundamentally, the entire genre just sounds like a weaker Boards of Canada track from twenty years ago, with added adolescent navel gazing. Quote
