The Fire Still Burns should be available pretty soon on LP as well. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted June 29, 2020 Report Posted June 29, 2020 Looks like there will be domestic CDs of these on the Valley of Search (VoS) label as well. Quote
mjazzg Posted June 29, 2020 Report Posted June 29, 2020 Mr Braufman tells me there's UK/European distro too, so that's me sorted Quote

JSngry Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 David Lee, Sonny's drummer from the early 70s, also played with Roy Ayers, a.o. One of the great WHOOOOOOSH drummers of all time, cymbals all the time, note the plural. A constant cushionbed of throbbing glowy metallic overtones. Check him out! Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 He's amazing with Dickie Landry on Chatham Square in the early 70s; that material will be rereleased this year. Quote

Never heard of it. Love the era. What's it like? 3 hours ago, JSngry said: David Lee, Sonny's drummer from the early 70s, also played with Roy Ayers, a.o. Also on those early 70's Sonny Rollins Milestones (plus the live in Japan), correct? I like those albums more than what the consensus opinion for them would indicate. Quote
JSngry Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 Also on some of them...that's him on "Poinciana" on Next Album. Those cymbals are amazing... He's also on Cutting Edge. which might be a slight mess in terms of recording, but not so bad that you can't hear him. There's video of one gig (at least one) that made it to commercial VHS at one point, David Lee is just ALL up in it with those cymbals. Quote

SOLOS is mid-size ensemble free improvisation (four woodwinds, two basses doubling on brass, drums, electric piano), pretty rollicking. 4 CUTS is one drone-y group improvisation, a solo bass tune (overdubbed), saxophone solos and duos. mjazzg Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 (edited) Here it is. This is the video that persuaded me to buy a copy last year Edited March 4, 2021 by mjazzg Quote

clifford_thornton Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 yes. I love the original but having blasted the transfers on headphones, it's ridiculous how good this stuff sounds. I am hopeful that at the pressing stage this good fortune continues. Quote
felser Posted March 4, 2021 Report Posted March 4, 2021 Will be glad to pick up the Landry, having completed a cursory sampling here. Look forward to the increased fidelity. Quote
Rabshakeh Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 Fantastic! The Landry reissue is great news. I love Solos. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted March 5, 2021 Report Posted March 5, 2021 Dickie is a longtime friend so it's great to see this stuff coming out again indeed. Quote
