mjazzg Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 (edited) Spike Wells has tweeted that Ron Mathewson, the great bassist on so many recordings, has died. Jazz In Britain also sent a message to the same effect. Another Covid victim. Edited December 4, 2020 by mjazzg Quote
clifford_thornton Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 ah damn, that's really sad news!!! Quote
sidewinder Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 (edited) Very sad news. The last time I saw him was decades ago at Scott’s in the Ronnie Scott Quintet, always a great player. Jazz In Britain have recently been issuing some of his old tape archive. RIP. Edited December 4, 2020 by sidewinder Quote
HutchFan Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 Sorry to hear this sad news. R.I.P. To honor Mathewson, I'm going to give this disc a spin today: Quote

I have the Ray Warleigh from this archive, definitely worth hearing too. I think I also caught Ron live with ‘Paz’, also the subject of one of those archive releases. The way he anchors ‘Trenton Place’ case in point. I’ve ordered ‘Free Flight’. Some negative reviews about the sonics on this recording from various quarters but the music sounds damn good to me ! The usual expert notes from Simon Spillett as well. Worth getting ! Quote
mikeweil Posted December 8, 2020 Report Posted December 8, 2020 R.I.P. He also played with Clarke-Boland for a while, IIRC -one of the last members of that band still alive. Quote
