Keith Jarrett Standards Trio, Whisper Not

The standards trio isn’t my favorite KJ format, I find a little of this stuff goes a long way - but the two CD live set Whisper Not is really great. Jarrett, Peacock and DeJohnette in a bebop heavy set.

This is my favorite Standards Trio recording. Keith Jarrett's narcissistic sentimentalism is a bit on the nose when he plays solo piano or Miles Davis/Bill Evans repertoire (which also shows that these two were very objective and hard-boiled artists), but when he plays Bud Powell or hard bop repertoire, he seems to be able to balance it out nicely.

How prominent is his vocalizing on this album?

I plunged in and bought many KJ Trio albums on one of Tommy's sales.  I found that, the more I listened, the less I noticed the vocalizing, and was able to concentrate more on the music, which is usually very good.

The noises don't bother me. It's the prissiness of the phrasing, the occurrence of which comes and goes. When it's not there, he's great. When it is....yuck.
