Guy Berger Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 I went somewhat berserk at Tower's 40% off + 5 for the price of 4 sale. (Only "somewhat" -- I only picked up 10 cds.) The following cost me $88.89: Art Ensemble of Chicago, Fanfare for the Warriors Albert Ayler, Spiritual Unity Gil Evans, Out of the Cool Jan Garbarek, Witchi Tai To Charlie Haden, Liberation Music Orchestra Charlie Haden & Hank Jones, Steal Away Roy Haynes, Out of the Afternoon Paul Shapiro, It's In the Twilight Archie Shepp, Four for Trane Bobo Stenson/Anders Jormin/Paul Motian, Goodbye Quote
The Magnificent Goldberg Posted November 25, 2006 Report Posted November 25, 2006 (edited) This one turned up this morning - "Apala messenger" by Haruna Ishola & his Apala Group. Very many thanks to Rod for putting me on to its availability. I've been looking for a good compilation of Haruna Ishola's work from the '60s and '70s and this is great. I only had a couple of tracks I taped off the radio many years ago. Ishola was the leading exponent of Apala music, popular among the northern Yoruba who generally follow Islam. Very different from the Highlife that is more popular along the southe coast of West Africa. MG Edited November 25, 2006 by The Magnificent Goldberg Quote

B. Goren. Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 That's a fun one! This is the best tribute to Charlie Parker I'm familiar with. Quote
7/4 Posted November 30, 2006 Report Posted November 30, 2006 Ordered these from CD Universe today, mostly Nonesuch Explorer reissues: 1 Debussy: Images, Estampes / Paul Jacobs... <snip>I've got these. You won't be disappointed. I'm guessing that you may already have most of these on LP? If you want to explore further, there's a wonderful series on the Italian label Felmay. I have some of the Explorers, but not the Debussy. Thanks. Quote
Matthew Posted December 1, 2006 Report Posted December 1, 2006 Well, checked how much I had left on my credit card, closed my eyes, prayed for courage, and bought this.... The Complete Bill Evans on Verve. Supposed to be "like new," the Amazon seller had 100% positive feedback. What the heck, you only live once. PS: this picture is not the copy I bought, my copy should not have rust on it -- I hope. Got back from my business trip last night and this was waiting for me, and it did have rust on it, Darn! might try to get it off. This thing is a monster of a set, but everything is in great shape; now I just have to start playing the music. Quote

Niko Posted December 8, 2006 Report Posted December 8, 2006 this order should have arrived today Charles Mingus - Eastcoasting Elmo Hope - Trio and Quintet Sam Rivers - Fuchsia Swing Song Andrew Hill - Andrew!!! now it's there... East Coasting is great, at least just with regards to the contributions of Shafi Hadi and Clarence Shaw i might like it even much better than Tijuana Moods; Hope is great, too; will take another 50 listens to find out whether the Rivers and the Hill are masterpieces or great but overrated records and I just "ran into" an AbraxasEsp sale where I got Albert Ayler's Prophecy and New York Eye and Ear Control and Charles Tyler's "Eastern Man Alone" Quote
king ubu Posted December 10, 2006 Report Posted December 10, 2006 East Coasting is one of the most beautiful Mingus records, in my opinion. The presence of Bill Evans makes it really special. I hope you got the Avenue Jazz/Rhino version with an alternate or two? You should try and find that version of the "Modern Jazz Symposium" album - it has additional tracks, including some fantastic Shafi Hadi playing! Quote
