The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 'Bout time someone else bought this. MG How is it? (maybe I shouldn't ask ) Just noticed they have a gig coming up in London later this month. Best bit of grease this year! And would stand comparison with almost any bit of grease made in the last fifty! GG Jr is developing a bit away from his father and it turns out he can sing quite well. I saw them in Brecon in 2000 and they were very good indeed (though swamped immediately after by Lonnie Smith/Ronnie Cuber/Peter Bernstein) and on the strength of this album (made in 2005 but took a long time to get it out) they've improved no end. I should go and see them if I were you. In fact, I should probably go and see them if I were me. Where's the gig? When? How much? MG Quote
sidewinder Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) In fact, I should probably go and see them if I were me. Where's the gig? When? How much? MG MG - It's the 'Jazz Cafe' in Camden Town 13-14th Dec. Not my favourite venue and I probably won't be able to get into town but it sounds tempting. Their admission (standing) is usually around £20 I think. Edited December 7, 2007 by sidewinder Quote

I don't MIND the venue, managed to get just behind Charles Earland's organ there, so I could see everything he was doing. But adding up the fare from South Wales, and a night in a hotel, I think I'll give it a miss. MG Quote
sidewinder Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 But adding up the fare from South Wales, and a night in a hotel, I think I'll give it a miss. Yep, I know that equation pretty well - but from the UK side of the border ! It has to be pretty special these days to get me up to London for a gig. Quote

mikelz777 Posted December 7, 2007 Report Posted December 7, 2007 (edited) Home - Cecilia Coleman Quintet Higher Standards- Cecilia Coleman Trio Kismet & Camelot - Cecilia Coleman on piano with Tim Givens on bass/cello These were part of CD Baby's $5.00 sale and have been simmering on the back burner of my wish list for some time. I decided to take advantage before they were taken off the sale list and I ended up regretting not getting them. I'd never heard of Cecilia Coleman until I heard one of her numbers being played on "Live 365" internet radio. I loved it and had to invesitgate further because I wanted to hear more. A Google search lead me to her web site which in turn pointed me to CD Baby. That these were part of the $5.00 sale was an only added bonus which allowed me to check them out in full at a great price. I've listened to the sound samples for each CD numerable times and find Cecilia Coleman to be a wonderful pianist with very solid support on all 3 CDs. Give the sound samples of Home a listen. There's a definite Horace Silver vibe and sound to her quintet. I found the trumpet and sax solos to be solid and interesting and really look forward to hearing this one in full. Kismet & Camelot sounds to me like it's going to be a nice Sunday morning or quiet evening type of CD. Find your way to the CD Baby site and give these CDs a listen!! mikelz777 Posted December 9, 2007 Report Posted December 9, 2007 (edited) Curse these sales that keep popping up!! Jazz Loft is dumping its inventory of Gambit, Jazz Factory, Lonehill Jazz and Definitive CDs for 40%-50% off and of course, I couldn't resist picking up a few 2-CD sets. With all these CD buys lately I think I've pre-spent my Christmas money! Edited December 9, 2007 by mikelz777 Quote

Matthew Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Grateful Dead: --- Two From The Vault. --- Terrapin Limited. --- Fallout From the Phil Zone. This last purchase completes my collect of all the official cds out there, except for the 10 cd Complete Fillmore West 1969, which I'm hoping someday will come down in price, or Rhino will re-release it next year. Now it's time to get serious on the concerts. Quote

The Magnificent Goldberg Posted December 10, 2007 Report Posted December 10, 2007 Well, I had a Virgin voucher for my brthday, so finally got around to going in to buy a record. Good grief! Virgin is now called Zavvi - the rumour is that Branson flogged the firm because he knew it was going down the tube and wanted it to go down under someone else's flag so much that he chucked in fifty million quid's worth of training as an enticer. Nick, at Spillers told me several weeks ago that I'd have difficulty spending the voucher. I did. There was literally only one album in the blues, jazz and world music sections to get. This one. It's OK - it's a recent set re-recording a lot of numbers of which I already have Baobab's original versions. I've got to say, the new performances aren't as good as the originals but, hell, the band's been together for well nigh forty years, with few personnel changes, and I'm not going to say that it's wrong for them to get paid by an English record company for remaking their old stuff that appeared on Senegalese labels. Nor am I going to refuse to support the effort and deny the guys their probably small royalties. Though, probably, I could have gone into the Urban section and picked up a Jill Scott MG Quote

The Ornette complete Hillcrest sessions and the Rahsaan Third Dimension aka Triple Threat plus Introducing are my latest acquisitions. This is a helluva sale, by the way, a ton of good-to-great material at very reasonable prices. Quote

You won't regret it, Paul! The Don Lanphere sides are very interesting, and Leo Parker's "Mona Lisa" is worth the price of the disc itself. Needless to say anything on the Haig and the Navarro sides, obviously. Quote

mikeweil Posted December 12, 2007 Report Posted December 12, 2007 Finally scored this rare LP on ebay: Been looking for this for several years now - there was a "buy it now" copy but at too high a price for the condition it was in, and now there were two copies offered - I had one competitor while bidding, and he outbid me on on the first copy, and I had the suspicion he wanted the second as well (?) but backed out at $ 41.00 - the next to last gap in my Don Patterson collection closed! Now cross your fingers for me that it arrives in time for Xmas! Quote
