Kevin Bresnahan Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago One of the good things about having your cardiologist put you on a low fat/cholesterol diet is that you lose a few pounds if you follow it. One of the bad things is that your clothes don't fit anymore. I have 3 Jazz tee shirts that I was going to drop in the Savers/Goodwill bin but thought that since two of the shirts were given to me by forum denizen Lonson, I'd offer them up here first. These are used/washed but certainly not worn out. Best thing is, they're free to whoever wants them. The two INIQLO shirts which I got from Lon ("Out To Lunch" & "Judgement!") are XXL, which is more like L to slightly XL here in the US. The Miles shirt is XL, and came as a bonus with a Miles Davis 45 rpm Miles Runs The Voodoo Down/In a Silent Way box released in 2013. Did I mention free? Quote
Dan Gould Posted 8 hours ago Report Posted 8 hours ago How much have you lost Kevin? Since I don't mind oversized shirts I don't need to part with any of my jazz or blues tees. Quote
felser Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago I own the Dolphy and Hill shirts also. Very well made. I especially like the Hill design. Quote

I have been diagnosed with some blockages so I've pretty much cut out all fried foods & I rarely eat fatty meats now. I eat most chicken breast. It's amazing how much you can lose just doing those two things. I miss french fries & chicken fingers though. I've lost about 30 pounds since October of last year after I got the news. I hope to lose a few more but you have to be careful not to lose it too fast. Quote

At the end of the month I will visit doctor on one year anniversary of hearing "diabetic level of A1C" as well as 275.5 on the scale (I'm 6' and a fraction). I had A1C at acceptable level three months after, and expect to be around 85 pounds lost when I see the doc - which per BMI would no longer be overweight but I believe another 10-15 is needed. I've done it thru elimination of most of the foods I enjoy, and starting mid-September daily walks, eventually with a 20 pound weight vest and 4 pound handweights. My drop-dead deadline (no pun intended) is to reach goal weight by my 60th in September. Quote
Dub Modal Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago Late on the shirts dammit but kudos to all of y'all's efforts at getting healthier. Quote
Kevin Bresnahan Posted 5 hours ago Author Report Posted 5 hours ago I recommend any of you over the age of about 55 to ask your doctor to get your cardiac calcium score. It's a simple CT of your heart and even if your health insurance won't cover it, it only costs about $150 out of pocket. My cousin Dan recommended I get it done because of my family history and my lifelong battle with high cholesterol. His dad (my uncle) had to get two triple bypass surgeries before he was 45. At the age of 54, Dan got his cardiac calcium score & it was 700. One of his arteries was 95% blocked. A week later, he got a quadruple bypass. I decided it was better to be proactive so I had it done. My score was over 1200! A cardiac catheritization showed that I have some pretty significant blockages but they are not recommending surgery so here I am - diet & exercise. Thank god I retired in 2023 or the stresses at work may have already killed me. Quote
jazzbo Posted 5 hours ago Report Posted 5 hours ago Very good advice. I had this done and was relieved to find that other than the irregular heart beat (which I knew before hand I had, and that stress testing has revealed becomes regular and steady when the rate is elevated and so not very worrisome) I have good cardiac health. Jut had my eyes tested and I still don't need to wear glasses--the only member of my family, parents or siblings, who hasn't needed glasses since adolescence. I'm grateful for that as well! Quote
rostasi Posted 4 hours ago Report Posted 4 hours ago (edited) Yeah, this is good to get this. I seem to remember recommending this to everyone here a few years ago because I was surprised to find out that you can have normal cholesterol and still have a high calcium score if plaque has already developed over time. Conversely, someone with high cholesterol might have a zero calcium score, but that doesn't mean they're risk-free. Soft plaque, which is more rupture-prone, may still be there. I came out with a big fat zero, but I feel better that I went. I remember it being only $75 when I got it and, yes, it wasn't covered by insurance. Edited 4 hours ago by rostasi Quote
felser Posted 1 hour ago Report Posted 1 hour ago Thanks for the tip and congrats on the progress people are making! I'm also working on better health and showing good results, though not as dramatic as you champions! Great success in finding and eliminatingc"hidden" sugar to get my A1C under control. Quote
