colinmce Posted December 11, 2025 Report Posted December 11, 2025 I have a handful of his CDs since they turn up so often in the dollar bins, and I've enjoyed them all. But I would give this one the nudge. Arguably slightly dated by now, but it's intense, highly personal, and passionate modern jazz. Quote
mikeweil Posted December 11, 2025 Report Posted December 11, 2025 I saw him live around that time, with his brother Antoine in the band. It was great, only that he overused the microphone, which he wouldn't really have needed in a club of that size. Quote

Rooster_Ties Posted December 12, 2025 Report Posted December 12, 2025 I’ve got all 3 (or maybe it’s 4?) of the ones with Gary Thomas — initially because of Gary — and the they’re all really good. On second thought, iirc, there are 3 where Gary’s on the entire album — and one that he only plays on like 2 tracks (and I don’t have that one). It’s interesting to hear Gary in such a straight-ahead context. Quote

That´s the kind of acoustic straight ahead I still listen to. That version of "Donna Lee" is incredible. And as I said, Cindy Blackman when she was a jazz only drummer was my favourite of her generation. Quote
