cliffpeterson Posted January 26 Report Posted January 26 Jorge Sylvester reported on his Facebook page that Carlos Ward died. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 26 Report Posted January 26 ugh, that's too bad. Kind man, and a beautiful player. Quote
colinmce Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 RIP. He had the uneviable position of following Jimmy Lyons in Cecil’s group, and I struggle with those albums most in his discography, but never stop coming back to them, I think to find what Ward sought to find in the music. And he had an incredible body of work outside. Quote
mikeweil Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 I only know him from Abdullah Ibrahim albums, and found him great in that context. R.I.P. Quote
clifford_thornton Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 absolutely; too bad they eventually had a falling out. Ward's playing with Karl Berger, Don Cherry, Rashied Ali, Cecil, and Paul Motian is also worth hearing. He did a record with Woody Shaw for Leo Records that's pretty strong. Quote
optatio Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 Carlos Ward and his quartet performed at the Göttingen Jazz Festival on November 9, 1996, at midnight. After the gig, he wanted to stay at the theater, but his tour manager insisted to take him back to the hotel. I gave him a bottle of red wine to console him... R.I.P. Quote

That sounds like the man I interviewed! Quote
king ubu Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 He's great on the two Ed Blackwell albums on Enja as well ... I fell in love with his playing as a kid, hearing his solos on "African Marketplace" again and again - one of my mom's favourite records, and now one of my own favourites. Quote

kh1958 Posted January 27 Report Posted January 27 I liked him in Don Pullen's Afro Brazilian Connection and the only time I saw Don Cherry live, he was on saxophone with Ed Blackwell at the Village Vanguard. That was two great sets of music. Sad news. Quote
