RIP. He had the uneviable position of following Jimmy Lyons in Cecil’s group, and I struggle with those albums most in his discography, but never stop coming back to them, I think to find what Ward sought to find in the music. And he had an incredible body of work outside.

Carlos Ward and his quartet performed at the Göttingen Jazz Festival on November 9, 1996, at midnight. After the gig, he wanted to stay at the theater, but his tour manager insisted to take him back to the hotel. I gave him a bottle of red wine to console him... R.I.P.

He's great on the two Ed Blackwell albums on Enja as well ... I fell in love with his playing as a kid, hearing his solos on "African Marketplace" again and again - one of my mom's favourite records, and now one of my own favourites.
