Pepico Jazz Posted April 10 Posted April 10 (edited) Hi: This week I have listened the Richie Cole vinyl, Return to Alto acres. In this recording, Mr. Cole was playing with Art Pepper (Clarinet & Alto sax), Billy Higgins at drums and Roger Kelloway at piano. This recording was made at San Francisco in 1982, and my favorites themes are Return to Alto acres, Things we did last summer and Alto acres blues but certainly, all themes are amazing for me. Rabshakeh Posted May 27 Posted May 27 I don't think that there are many Cole fans on this forum, but I have always had a soft spot for him. Fun playing and I like the goofiness. For some reason I never really bonded with this one entirely - I prefer Cole a year or two before. Quote
felser Posted May 30 Posted May 30 Some thoughts on Cole: 1 - As far as his recordings, the earlier and purer, the better. 2 - 'Trenton Makes, The World Takes' made quite a scene with the 3rd Street Jazz community in Philly when it was released. A call back to bop in a very different mid-70's environment. 3 - Got to see him live at Penn's Landing in 1988. He had a quartet with Vic Juris, and the interplay between Cole and Juris was telepathic. Also saw him at the Foxhole in the late 70's in a gig booked under Eddie Jefferson's name. Quote
