Off the top of my head,

1) "Don't Stop 'till You Get Enough" Michael Jackson (you could probably sub any of his other singles from Off the Wall or Thriller)

2) "Little Red Corvette" Prince

3) "Walk this Way" Run-DMC (there are 100s of other rap tunes from the 80s I'd put ahead of this one, but I think this is probably the only one popular enough to qualify)

How 'bout:

Radio Free Europe - REM

Back on the Chain Gang - Pretenders

Tempted - Squeeze

(Elvis Costello has some great stuff from the 1980s, but I wasn't sure it was "popular" enough. I believe the three I've got here were all "radio hits.")

Was that REM song really a radio hit? I thought it was more popular on an "indie rock" level. Just curious, not questioning.

I guess it depended on what radio station you were listening to :D

I lived in Chicago for a fair part of the 1980s and they played it relatively often on WXRT, which, admittedly, WAS pretty much of an "indie rock" station.

Good 1980s music fodder here:1980s music

But then it seems that most of my "favorite eighties songs" are actually from the late '70s...

I know what you mean!

"Gotta Gettaway"

"Don't Let's Start"

"Bob Dylan Wrote Propoganda Songs"

What's that you say? They all have to be POPULAR?? Ah, screw it.

Somebody mentioned Elvis Costello as maybe not having anything quite popular enough, but two he was involved with were:

"Every Day I Write the Book" - a great one that I think may have cracked the American Top 40

and with Squeeze (Elvis on backing vox) - "Black Coffee in Bed" another favorite that I think had a fair amount of success in the U.S.

Do you mean really popular 80's songs? This makes me think of the kind of stuff you'd hear at a poorly DJed wedding. Yeesh......

Sorry to be a stick-in-the-mud but I'm not a part of the VH-1 generation, despite the intense marketing campiagn geared toward my demographic. I'm not at all interested in revisiting things for kitch value and I don't like music for ironic reasons. I say, if it sucked then....it's still f*cking sucks, man.

This is as close as I get....

1. The Police - "Spirits in the Material World" (which is weird because I dislike Sting so much that it basically ruined the Police for me.)

2. Talking Heads - "Once in a Lifetime"

3. Rob Base & DJ EZ-Rock - "It Takes Two"

My top 3 in no order would be:

1. I Still Believe - Brenda K. Starr

2. Don't Dream It's Over - Crowded House

3. Fight Fire with Fire - Metallica (would rank Battery and Damage Inc up here too)

This thread brings back all those memories... -_-

I kind of like the song as well, but never would admit that to anyone's face! :winky:

"Hey, you know a song I liked back in the day, Kajagoogoo's Too Shy, Shy"

Nope, never would do that.

Now, if we are going to talk Culture Club....Church of the Poison Mind! :tup

Megadeth's Peace sells(But who's buying) Hey, I heard it on the radio a few times!

Flirts -Jukebox (Don't Put Another Dime) What can I say, my taste in music is diverse, and sucks!

And since my Math skills are not what they once were...

For some unknown reason, this song popped in my head(Perhaps it pooped there as well)

Remember?

Break My Stride- Matthew Wilder >great lyrics that will change your life, right here!<

Yeah... it's a good thing I admitted to liking it only on the internet. ^_^
