  1. Made me think of the Drive-By Truckers line from Let There Be Rock: "So I never saw Lynyrd Skynyrd but I sure saw Ozzy Osbourne with Randy Rhoads in 82 Right before that plane crash." Back on topic: Happy birthday Ozzy! His eight Black Sabbath studio recordings and his early solo LPs were the foundation for my teenage years.
  2. Tonight: Bob Dylan at Northrop. Pretty fun show with Dylan actually appearing to enjoy himself.
  3. Tonight: Two sets of Booker T & The MGs with Eddie Floyd at the Dakota. Really a great evening of Stax music.
  4. In the 1990's I watched quite a few of his movies and bought the LPs when I could find them. In the films, the acting and editing was awful but I recall they were still quite a bit of fun to watch after an evening of drinking. From memory (and it is hazy), I think I enjoyed Dolemite and The Human Tornado the most. I guess I will have to play my LPs of Eat Out More Often and This Pu**y Belongs To Me for old times sake tonight.
  5. Mark, thank you for posting these! Great pictures that really capture the spirit.
  6. The New Standards and Nick Lowe tonight at the Dakota.
  7. I looked around but did not see any threads on this. Has anyone picked one up? I just started listening to the 2 CD version. So far I am impressed with the sound and how clear the vocals are even though everything from this era has his vocals lower in the mix.
  8. Great pictures! Thank you for posting them.
  9. Those were the days! I bought Anthrax, Slayer, Kreator, Overkill, Exodus, Celtic Frost, Misfits, etc. (heck even the first Guns 'N' Roses CD!) all with that logic. I even bought the first Living Colour CD because Scott Ian had one of their T shirts on in an issue of Rip! This was how I bought my first jazz & blues CDs as well. True for me as well. Even though they were on Elektra it felt more like a cult thing than anything a major label was marketing to me. Their T shirts were at one time an easy way to identify if someone was OK. I remember when the self titled CD came out it literally felt like a slap in the face to me and my friends.
  10. I hear what your saying. I got into them around Master of Puppets but I never had a chance to see them in concert until the Justice tour (twice in fact once with Queensrÿche warming up and the other with the Cult). When Justice came out I enjoyed it and the tour as well but by the time the self titled CD arrived I didn't care for what they were doing (might also have been because by that time I had found grunge, hip hop, jazz, blues, etc.) but still went to the show. It was one of the most disapointing live shows I have ever seen.
  11. Thanks for bringing back the memories. Pretty crazy to think it has been 22 years already. I recall first finding out on MTV News and being shocked. You are completely right about them never being the same after Cliff died.
  12. I have only seen the Minnesota Orchestra a handful of times. I have always thought the performances were first class but the patrons a tad too stuffy for me. From what I have seen the program doesn't have as much variety as the Chicago Symphony but I believe it is also much cheaper. I have heard very good things about the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra but have yet to attend. I might go next month since they will have Maria Schneider in town to premier a piece they commissioned. There is also The Schubert Club but it has more of a focus on recital performances and The Minnesota Opera, which I have also heard good things about.
  13. Thanks for the information. I noticed that McCoy and Marc Ribot were playing Yoshi's in November, which kind of surprised me. Now it all makes sense.
  14. Will it be your first time seeing him? I would love to hear how it turned out.
  15. Well? Surprisingly it was a very good show. I didn't like all the material, but as a whole they're definitely an interesting band. They have the ability to be a jam band, but they're happy with being succinct and keeping the songs relatively short. They did stretch out on a few numbers and were quite impressive. The one guitarist played pedal steel on quite a few tunes and also played saxophone on a couple songs. Their drummer is rock solid. Thanks for the review. Surprisingly, I have really been enjoying their recordings, so I bought tickets for to see them in the beginning of October.
  16. Bill Kirchen on the free stage at the State Fair tonight.
  17. Tonight it was Still Black Still Proud: The African Tribute to James Brown with Pee Wee Ellis, Fred Wesley Jr., Martha High, Fred Ross, Vieux Farka Touré, Cheikh Lô, & Papa Assane with Pee Wee & Fred's band. This past Thursday and Friday I saw Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings on the free stage at the State Fair.
